How many times has Aaron Boone been ejected? Yankees skipper tossed after umpire attributes fan jeer to manager

Aaron Boone consistently finds new and creative ways to get himself ejected from Yankees games, but his ejection from Monday’s game against the Athletics was not his fault.

Boone was run from the game after just five pitches by home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt. The two were jawing about a call early in the game after Carlos Rodon hit Esteury Ruiz with a pitch.

Boone wanted Wendelstedt to check if Ruiz swung at the pitch. Wendlestadt hit back at Boone and immediately warned him not to say anything more.

“Hey, you’re not yelling at me. I did what I was supposed to do and checked!” Wendelstedt shouted, per audio from the Yankees broadcast. “I’m looking for him to get hit by the pitch. You got anything else to say, you’re gone, OK?”

Boone complied, remaining silent. He hardly even moved his mouth as he prepared to lay the argument to rest.

Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus feverishly gestured that the comment had come from a fan as Boone came onto the field to explain what happened to Wendelstedt.

“I didn’t say a word,” Boone pleaded. “It came from the crowd.”

“I don’t care,” replied Wendelstedt.

— The Sporting News (@sportingnews) April 22, 2024The umpire’s response caused the already irate Boone to boil over.

“What do you mean you don’t care? I did not say a word,” Boone said. “It was on top of the dugout. It’s bulls—. Bulls—! I didn’t say anything, Hunter. OK? I did not say a f—ing thing!”

Wendelstedt was unmoved by Boone’s protest and the manager eventually left the field. That left Ausmus to manage the rest of the day game against the Athletics.

Wendelstedt was wrong to throw Boone out of the game. Several video reviews clearly showed that a fan in the first row voiced his frustration at the umpire and not the Yankees manager.

If Wendelstedt needs more proof, the fan in question quickly ditched his blue pullover, hoping that a costume change would prevent him from drawing too much attention. It had no such effect.

— Yankees Videos (@snyyankees) April 22, 2024It isn’t clear whether MLB will address Wendelstedt’s decision or if it will look to mitigate future unwarranted ejections by any means.

Regardless, Aaron Boone will add to his career ejection tally, one that is already among the highest among active MLB managers.

How many times has Aaron Boone been ejected?Boone has now been ejected 35 times over his seven seasons as Yankees manager. He was managing his 893rd regular-season game Monday, meaning that he has been thrown out of about 3.9 percent of his games as manager.

Boone now ranks tied for the 48th-most ejections in MLB history with Bud Black and Fred Clarke. Boone reached those lofty heights despite managing 1,500 fewer games than either manager.

Boone is presentily tied for third in ejections among MLB’s active managers. Below is a full look at the league’s most ejected managers, per Baseball Reference:

Rank Manager Ejections Games 1 Bruce Bochy 82 4,217 2 Bob Melvin 61 2,965 3 Bud Black 35 2,416   Aaron Boone 35 839 5 Craig Counsell 28 1,354 6 David Bell 27 729 7 A.J. Hinch 22 1,530   Scott Servais 22 1,216 9 Brian Snitker 19 1,175 10 Torey Lovullo 17 1,055Boone moved up the list ahead of the 2024 MLB season thanks to Terry Francona’s retirement and Buck Showalter’s parting with the Mets.

If Boone continues to go at the rate he’s going, he should soon blow by Black as he looks to gain ground on Bochy and Melvin.
