How to Watch Oppenheimer

For a three-hour-long historical drama, Oppenheimer certainly defied expectations at the box office. It definitely helped, of course, that the Christopher Nolan-directed film received a popularity boost from all the Barbenheimer hype. The film shattered its initial box-office projections and has since grossed over $950 million. Critical acclaim remains high, and Oppenheimer is set to be nominated in multiple categories this awards season.

Part of that success? It’s because Nolan treated J. Robert Oppenheimer as the controversial and transformative world figure that he was—developing the destructive nuclear force that eventually ended World War II and killed hundreds of thousands of people in Japan. Naturally, Oppenheimer felt immense guilt for his creation, and regretted what became of his pursuit of science. It’s the story of a man who thought he was doing the right thing, until he realized that making the deadliest weapon the world had ever seen could lead to nuclear war.

Oppenheimer is up for 13 awards at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, including every major category. It’s also up for Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the upcoming Golden Globes, as well as Best Director, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Supporting Actress (Blunt), Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson). If that wasn’t enough, Görannsson’s score is even up for a Grammy Award.

Though you can still catch Oppenheimer in limited IMAX theaters (as Nolan would insist), the film is available to rent for audiences at home on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, YouTube, and Google Play Movies. We don’t yet have word regarding Oppenheimer’s streaming plans, though it’ll likely hit Peacock later this year. For now, there’s still time to fit in a Barbie viewing, too. We won’t tell anyone that you missed out on all the Internet fun.
