Huey Lewis Tragically Lost His Hearing — Now He’s Making the Most of It with Comedic Mockumentary, ‘Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis’

Six years after revealing he had suffered hearing loss as a result of Ménière’s disease, Huey Lewis is giving fans a comedic glimpse into his life, with “Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis.” The half-hour mockumentary, in which the rock star will both headline and produce, sees Lewis playing a fictionalized version of himself in the style of Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

The single-camera show is in development at Fox, with Fox Entertainment Studios, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, and Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot. Written and executive produced by Kirker Butler of “Only Murders in the Building” fame, “Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis” follows rock legend Huey Lewis as he navigates his life after losing his hearing. With his eccentric celebrity friends and co-dependent family, Huey will tackle the next phase of his life with a little bit of Heart and Soul.

Huey Lewis previously teamed up with Kapital Entertainment for an hour-long anthology series, with each season designed as a self-contained romantic story inspired by Lewis’ music. The project landed at Fox for development in 2021 after some competition. Kaplan has also worked with Kimmelot on a comedy series called “The Home,” and Jimmy Kimmel is a longtime friend and fly-fishing companion of Lewis.With his band, Huey Lewis & The News, Lewis has sold over 30 million albums over his career, with a slew of Top 10 singles with hits like “Power of Love,” “The Heart of Rock & Roll,” and “I Want a New Drug.” The band released Weather, their first album of original material in nearly 20 years, back in February 2020. Meanwhile, a musical featuring the band’s music, “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” debuted on Broadway this year.

Lewis is actually no stranger to acting — nor to Broadway. He’s played Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago,” and has also appeared in the movie Duets with Gwyneth Paltrow. He’s also had a recurring part on the sitcom Hot in Cleveland.
