‘I told you so’ – Oscar De La Hoya continues Canelo Alvarez feud with brutal reaction to Edgar Berlanga win

Oscar De La Hoya has suggested Canelo Alvarez’s fight with Edgar Berlanga was boring.

Alvarez took the latest step in his career of pound-for-pound dominance as he took on challenger Edgar Berlanga, beating him in a dominant display at the T-Mobile Arena to retain his world titles.

But estranged promoter of Alvarez and boxing legend De La Hoya, was quick to put down his efforts on social media.

He wrote: “I told you so. You should have saved your hard earned money [several sleeping emojis].”

He responded: “[Laughing face emojis] Wow so he threw more than 3 punches a round.”

Alvarez did not only throw three punches a round and controlled the spectacle for the vast majority in the verdict of fans.

De La Hoya had fumed at Alvarez’s decision to fight Berlanga before the event, and had ranted over his fighting style.

He promoted Alvarez for ten years between 2010 and 2020 overseeing the astonishing rise of the pound-for-pound superstar.

But the pair now have an estranged relationship which soured as Alvarez decided to part ways with the icon’s Golden Boy Promotions.

He has since gone on to dominate at 168lbs and currently holds the unified world titles which he retained against Berlanga.

The champion has also been forever thrust into a rivalry with David Benavidez, but has demanded $200 million to make the fight happen.

Instead it appears Alvarez would be interested in a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, as he seeks revenge for his defeat in May 2022.

Bivol will face Artur Beterbiev for the undisputed light-heavyweight titles next month, and Alvarez could look to set up a mega-fight in 2025.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said of the potential clash: If you pay him the money, he will fight Benavidez.

“Listen, let’s see what happens with Bivol against Beterbiev. I don’t think that’s a fight that Eddy Reynoso will be screaming for.

“If Bivol were to win, you have the undisputed fight at 175. That’s a big fight.”
