‘I’m sticking to my word’ – Scottie Scheffler reaffirms vow to withdraw from The Masters despite leading field
Scottie Scheffler is the sole leader of this year’s Masters but one outside factor could derail his bid for a second green jacket.
The world number one and 2022 Masters champion is justifying his pre-tournament favourite tag at Augusta National and heads into the final day on top of the leaderboard.

The world number one is going well at AugustaCredit: GettyBut with his wife Meredith only weeks away from giving birth to their first child, the American has vowed to leave the major at a moment’s notice if she goes into labour.
“People have asked us how our preparation is going for the baby,” Scheffler said on Thursday.
“The nursery is not quite ready and we’ve had some issues at our house the last few weeks. I think that’s the exciting part. I think we are definitely underprepared to be parents.
“As far as her going into labour, I wouldn’t say I’m very concerned. We haven’t seen any of the early signs.

Scheffler’s stance has remained the same throughout the week.
And he has confirmed ahead of the final round that he will still be leaving the tournament should his wife go into labour.
Speaking after the third round, the leader said: “I’m sticking to my word.

“I think you only have your first child once so I’d rather be at home if that’s going to happen.
“I definitely have a way to get home pretty quickly. I’ll be available to go home whenever I need to.”
He continued: “Meredith and I are both at a very exciting time in our lives and we’re excited to start the new journey of parenthood together.
“It’s been fun so far and we’re looking forward to getting that baby out of Meredith’s belly and into the world.”

Incredibly, Scheffler isn’t the only player in this year’s Masters field awaiting a newborn.
Sam Burns is also awaiting the birth of his first child with his wife Caroline but he has missed the cut so can relax slightly.
Scheffler will be hoping to squeeze in the final day of the tournament before the birth of his child after a strong showing.
He is sitting at seven-under-par as the sole leader of The Masters, with Collin Morikawa and Max Homa his closest rivals as he eyes a second green jacket.
