Inter pulled off a surprise victory in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final, as a late goal at the Allianz Arena earned them a 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich. They are now in pole position to advance.

Can Bayern mount a comeback at San Siro to seal a place in the semi-finals, or will Inter complete the job on Wednesday night?

Inter vs Bayern Munich predictionsOf all four Champions League quarter-final ties, this one always looked like the toughest to call.

And so it has proved. Whereas there is a two-goal gap between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, a three-goal margin between Arsenal and Real Madrid, and a four-goal deficit for Borussia Dortmund against Barcelona, Inter and Bayern Munich are separated by a single strike.

It is the Italian outfit who lead at the midway point. They beat Bayern 2-1 at the Allianz Arena in the first leg to take a lead back to San Siro.

It was an impressive result for Simone Inzaghi’s side, who arrived in Bavaria as underdogs. Lautaro Martinez gave Inter the lead in the 38th minute, before Thomas Muller appeared to have rescued a point for Bayern late on.

There was still time for more drama, though, and Davide Frattesi was the hero for Inter in the 88th minute.

“More than the result, I’d focus on the way we played,” Inzaghi said after the first leg. “Bayern are a very strong side but we went toe to toe with them in terms of determination, courage and aggression. Bayern tried to press us, but we played quality football.”

Inzaghi was right to praise his team’s display. Inter were disciplined and diligent without the ball, and they showed precision in their passing despite having a minority of possession.

They were brave, too, inviting the press from Bayern by building up from the back before firing quick passes forward to exploit the space left behind.

Inter had probably been underrated before the first legs, but their win in Munich made many observers sit up and take notice. They were runners-up in this competition in 2023 and currently lead the way in Serie A, yet relatively few people have picked them out as potential winners.

Bayern are not out of the tie yet, however. They have not been firing on all cylinders of late, as a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund at the weekend demonstrated. 

Injuries have not helped, with Jamal Musiala’s absence felt particularly sorely by Vincent Kompany and co.

But while the initiative is now with Inter, Bayern are more than capable of going to San Siro and winning. This quarter-final remains delicately balanced ahead of the conclusion on Wednesday.

Inter’s defence has been mean throughout this season’s Champions League. They only conceded one goal in the whole league phase, followed by one more across two legs against Feyenoord.

That complicates Bayern’s task, especially with key creator Jamal Musiala forced to watch on from the sidelines.

Bayern will remain in the tie throughout, but Inter can get the draw they need to go through.

Second half higher scoringBecause of their aggregate deficit, Real Madrid, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund will need to be quick out of the traps in their second legs.

Bayern Munich can afford to be more patient. They are only one goal behind, after all, and it would only take a second for them to restore parity.

Inter will be targeting a measured, controlled performance. They might be happy to concede possession for periods of the game before breaking forward at speed.

We anticipate a cagey first 45 minutes at San Siro, with the bulk of the goals likely to come after the interval.

Those two forwards have a special understanding. If Inter are to win the Champions League, they will need some big performances from their front two.

Martinez used to be linked with moves to La Liga and the Premier League on a regular basis, but he is settled in Milan and under contract until 2029.

The Inter captain needs one more goal to reach 150 for the club and we like his chances of hitting that milestone here.

Bayern Munich will have to keep a closer eye on him at San Siro than they did at the Allianz Arena.
