Is Clash of Clans Dead?

Clash of Clans was released back in 2012 – nearly 12 years ago. Over the years, countless new games have entered the fray, major developers like Riot Games and Activision have launched major mobile games, and the entire handheld gaming industry has evolved. But, has the freemium strategy game managed to weather the storm? The real question is whether Clash of Clans is dead after all these years or the game has earned a title as something that can’t be killed.

Is Clash of Clans Dead: No, it is not
Clash of Clans seemed to have edged its name in immortality. Despite being released more than 12 years ago, the game is still widely spoken about and played. Overall, the game boasts an impressive 500 million plus downloads. This number was achieved back in 2018 itself, meaning the game could be edging towards the magical number of 1 billion in the coming future.

Supercell has managed to keep the game popular with constant updates – both to the graphics and in-game mechanics. It’s not surprising for the Finnish developer to do this. Clash of Clans is one of its most revenue-generating titles. According to a 2023 Statista report, the game has grossed $5.4 billion in lifetime sales, far ahead of Clash Royale’s $2.9 billion.

While there are no current numbers of monthly active users – only Supercell knows that some reports have made calculations on what the player count is currently. According to Business of Apps, the game currently has an estimated 75 million monthly active users, which is a really impressive number.

Esports also suggests an engaged player base
Over the years, Supercell has added a lot of updates to the game to keep its players engaged. One of them was the launch of a new mode to introduce esports to Clash of Clans.

The Clash of Clans World Championship 2023 achieved a peak viewership of 55,506, per Esports Charts. This is a very impressive number for a game that isn’t, comparatively, the most exciting esports title to watch. The statistics indicate that the game has a loyal and engaged fanbase.

Thus, Clash of Clans isn’t going anywhere and is certainly not dead. With its longevity, the question arises if the game could ever be killed or replaced by a rival. Many games have tried but none have succeeded. In fact, you can even play Clash of Clans on PC now.
