Is Disclaimer* Coming Back for Season 2?

There are only two episodes left of Disclaimer*, and Catherine Ravenscroftā€™s (Cate Blanchett) world is falling apart. Her husband, Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen); son, Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee); and coworkers turned on her after reading The Perfect Strangerā€”a book about her past. In the novel, the main character is an egotistical mother who neglects her son to have an affair. Then she lets her lover die as he saves her child.

Naturally, her peers arenā€™t too happy with what theyā€™ve read. It gets worse. The Perfect Strangerā€™s publisher, Stephen Brigstock (Kevin Kline), wants to ruin Catherineā€™s life. He believes she killed his sonā€”and heā€™s using The Perfect Stranger to prove it. He wonā€™t stop until Catherine feels the same pain that he does.

With the season coming to a close, Stephen is running out of time to complete his mission. Meanwhile, Catherine is moments away from losing her loved ones. This Friday, the penultimate episode premieres, and then the following week Apple TV+ will drop the finale. So viewers are probably asking: Is Disclaimer* coming back for another season?

Well, we donā€™t have an answer yet. The streamer has not announced plans for a second season, and the director, Alfonso CuarĆ³n, hasnā€™t spoken about extending the narrative. Disclaimer* is based on RenĆ©e Knightā€™s novel of the same nameā€”which is a stand-alone story that the author never continuedā€”and the show has been a relatively faithful adaptation.

If CuarĆ³n wanted to continue with it, heā€™d have to write it from scratch. Thatā€™s not to say he couldnā€™t. The man is responsible for Children of Men, Gravity, and the Oscar-winning Roma, but penning a new season of Disclaimer* is a different beast. Heā€™d need a green light from Apple TV+, likely a blessing from Knight, and, of course, time to work on it.

In a Golden Globes interview, CuarĆ³n explained that Disclaimer* was a laborious project. When asked about his biggest challenge, he said, ā€œTime, because it was like making four films!ā€ The series has multiple perspectivesā€”and CuarĆ³n chose to film each one differently. The result is stunning, but Iā€™d understand if the director wanted to step back and work on something new.
