“It’s Sad News for Boxing”: Amir Khan Breaks Silence After Former Rival Willie Limond’s Tragic Death

The boxing community today mourns the passing of Willie Limond. As news of his untimely demise emerged earlier today, multiple noteworthy names of the sport poured in with their heartfelt homages to the Scottish fighter. One among them was his former opponent, Amir Khan. 

As per reports, the 45-year-old fell ill a while earlier when he was preparing for his upcoming fight. He was slated to clash against Geordie Joe Laws at the city’s Emirates Arena on May 3. However, less than a month after the fight was finalized, his son informed fans that the fighter had passed away. Sources suggest that the fighter was taken to the hospital after he suffered a seizure while driving. Outlining these details, Amir Khan had a few things to say about the late boxer.

On his X, Khan sought to inform his fan base of the passing of Limond. As he did that, he also let out a prayer for the late fighter and the family he left behind. He said in the video, “This is a short video about a former opponent, I faced back in 2007 for the commonwealth title. It was my first major title as a professional boxer and I boxed against a guy called Willie Limond. Now, Willie Limond was driving and had a seizure and was then taken to the hospital and passed away. “

He noted further, “My thoughts go to his family. If there’s any way I can help or support you, please get in touch with me or my team. It’s sad news for boxing. He was a great champion, he was a great person, and we met a few times after we fought each other… My prayers go out for Willie. Rest in peace champ.”

In the year 2007, only once beaten, Limond clashed with Khan at the O2 Arena in Greenwich for the Commonwealth Title in the lightweight division. The head-to-head fight was nail-biting from the beginning to the climactic end. While Khan was dropped in the 6th round, Limond also saw the face of the canvas in the following round. However, in the 8th round, the former champion sought retirement, and the fight was ruled in Amir Khan’s favor.

A Grieving Son Reflects on His LossOn his Instagram stories, Jake Limond, who is also walking in his father’s footsteps to the ring wrote a heartfelt message for the late boxer. He wrote, “Shouldn’t even have to be writing a post like this at all and I normally wouldn’t but because of all the journalists and the fake news that has been spread about I have to.”

“My dad passed away in the early hours of the morning around 3am. He fought on for near enough 10 days. Warrior. Love you da,” he concluded.

The 20-year-old turned super pro in the year 2022. In a four-round fight against Dean Wilkinson, he sailed to victory on points. Since then, he’s undertaken 6 bouts and remains undefeated.
