‘It’s Selling Like Hot Cakes’: Hokkaido Goes Crazy for Ghost of Yotei on PS5

Government hopes game will drive tourism

Image: Sammy Barker / Push SquareA local Japanese news report has spotlighted the importance of Ghost of Yotei to the Hokkaido region which inspired it.

The PS5 exclusive – which launched last week – is “selling like hot cakes” according to one Yodobashi employee in Sapporo, with the anticipation being it’ll be one of the best-selling titles on Sony’s console this year in Japan.

In fact, so strong is its influence that some local retailers have been given permission to create original Ghost of Yotei merchandise, like wood carved key rings and coasters. In addition, the government is hoping to use the game to boost tourism.

A similar thing occurred on the island of Tsushima, where developer Sucker Punch was awarded various accolades by the local authorities for its influence on the area.

Last week, PlayStation announced a collaboration with Klook to take interested players on a tour around some of the landmarks from the game. It’s certainly something we’d love to take advantage of!
