Izzy MacArthur’s newest single “Exit Wounds” is now available on music streaming services, highlighting the 21-year-old’s knack for confessional-style writing in her music. The following was created in partnership with earthprogram.

“Walk home, spinning in my head/’Cause we never stood on solid ground/But everything that went up came crashing down,” the lyrics of “Exit Wounds” begin, painting a picture through lyrics. Izzy invites listeners to immerse themselves in the vivid recount of a life they feel like they’ve lived before.

“Exit Wounds” reflects further inwards with a sense of vulnerability over a fluttering synth, acoustic and electric guitars, and electronic drums. The track deals with the all-too-familar experience of returning home after a long time and feeling as though everything has changed. “My favorite music comes from anywhere between the ‘80s to right now. I listen to a lot of alternative and indie rock, but I also am just a lover of pop music,” Izzy told Digital Music News. “Anything that I feel like I can dance to, regardless of lyrical content, makes me excited. If I find myself dancing along in my room, I know I’ll listen to it.”

The New York born and raised alternative pop singer-songwriter embraces such havoc head-on with a fierce determination. She writes poignant, sharp lyrics—as if pulled from the thoughts no one wants to say out loud. Izzy invites listeners to immerse themselves in a vivid recount of a life they feel like they’ve lived before.

“What I love about this song is that I built more of a fictional situation around myself, reflecting more on the anxiety of bumping into someone than it actually happening,” Izzy continues. “I was growing up anxious and returning home from college, and growing up in New York City, the world sometimes feels wildly small. If I go outside, there’s a chance of me bumping into someone I knew at some point. I felt like I had changed so much since moving to LA, and felt the anxiety of someone I used to know, then fell out of touch with.”

Izzy MacArthur cites her current favorite artists as inspirations including Lorde, Sam Fender, and The 1975. She also cites artists she loved growing up including Fallout Boy, Catfish and the Bottlemen, early Miley Cyrus, and Bon Iver as major contributions to her current sound. This wide array of artists has one common thread—clever lyricism and incredible storytelling.
