Jagex reveals new quests, bosses, and Project Zanaris for Old School RuneScape

Developer Jagex revealed a plethora of new content for its beloved MMO during the Old School RuneScape Summer Summit 2024 livestream. This includes new quests, bosses, and Project Zanaris, a brand-new community servers initiative.

The Summer Summit is a chance for Jagex to show what it’s been working on for Old School RuneScape that’s still to come to the game this year and beyond. The game was initially released in 2013 and drew in far more players than expected thanks to its focus as an MMO experience that many remember growing up with before the original RuneScape was updated. As a result, new content for the game took a while to get into a rhythm, but this year leading into 2025 might be the biggest the game has ever seen.

Everything announced during the Old School RuneScape Summer Summit 2024 Image via Jagex Leagues V: Raging Echoes is a new and improved League system that’ll launch alongside Raging Echoes. It serves as the best reason yet to become a Leagues legend because it revamps how the system reuses content with every refresh. This is the place where players can get to grips with combat and fighting bosses, and soon, it’ll feature a collection of fresh content from the upcoming Varlamore: Rising Darkness update. The aim is to make the Leagues experience feel better than ever before.

Varlamore: The Rising Darkness is, as many Old School RuneScape fans will know, the next major segment in the game’s story. The update launches on September 25, 2024, and delves into the attempts on Servius’s life and the Twilight Emissaries. There are new areas to explore and a massive group boss to team up and fight: Hueycoatl. Outside of adventuring and fighting, players will also be able to boost their Agility skill through the Colossal Wyrm Agility Course and master a new Herblore activity, Mixology.

Varlamore: The Final Dawn is the final part of the Varlamore trilogy. It arrives with the Varlamore: The Risign Darkness update and adds three new areas players will adventure through: The Auburn Valley, Custodia Pass, and Tlati Rainforest. This is slated to be the epic heroic conclusion to the story, so keep an eye out if you’ve been up to date with all the story content so far.

Jagex also revealed Project Zanaris, a community servers project for Old School RuneScape that gives players the power to set their own rules for the world, adventures, and their clans. It sounds like a fantastic feature that will finally give players the customization they’ve wanted on servers, so they can do all sorts of crazy things, such as setting up a cabbage cult.

Overhauls for Old School RuneScape‘s visuals were also briefly discussed during the livestream, which should serve to make the game look better on both PC and mobile. Ice and Giant bosses were teased for the future, though we’ll be waiting a while to get those.

Finally, Jagex teased Wrathmaw. It’s inspired by the ‘Breaches’ Wilderness boss spawns in Old School RuneScape‘s Deadman mode, and the developer is looking for feedback on what it’s bringing to the game. This promises to be an intriguing new adventure for players who want a real challenge, so keep an eye out for those polls when they go live.

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t all that’s coming to Old School RuneScape in the future. For example, sailing is a new activity and skill that’s planned for 2025, but all of the content shown during this Summer Summit is much more set in stone and very much planned for earlier implementation.
