Jamaica vs. USA live score: USMNT result, updates, stats from first leg of CONCACAF Nations League quaterfinal

Looking to defend their status as the only winners of the CONCACAF Nations League thus far, the United States have been drawn against Jamaica for the quarterfinals of the 2024/25 tournament, set for the first of their two-legged matchup from Kingston on Thursday.

The U.S. has lifted the trophy in each of the first three Nations League competitions, beating Mexico in two of the finals and Canada in the other.

New head coach Mauricio Pochettino made his USMNT debut last month in a pair of friendlies and now gets his first taste of competitive action as he meets the pesky Reggae Boys across two matches. Jamaica has given the U.S. a tough go in nearly all of their recent meetings, either pulling out a surprise result or, at the very least, pushing the United States to the brink.

Jamaica finished third in the last Nations League, knocked out by the U.S. in the semifinals despite a scare for the favorites that required a late equalizer plus an extra-time victory to see them through.

The Sporting News is following the Jamaica vs. USA match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Jamaica vs. USA live updates, highlights from Nations League first leg1 hour 15 mins to kick: For some reason, Spanish tabloid Fichajes has reported that Christian Pulisic is plotting a move back to the Premier League where he would join West Ham either this winter or next summer.

This makes little season for a number of reasons, first and foremost why the Spanish press would know anything about an American player in Italy moving to an English club. Second, it doesn’t make any sense why Pulisic, enjoying enormous success in his second season at Milan, would move to a Premier League side struggling for a mid-table position and miles off European qualification.

Don’t believe everything you read.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: A really cool video was released yesterday, presumably from one of the USMNT friendlies last month, where U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner gives a pre-match pep talk to the starting lineup. In the huddle, Turner tells the team to “protect this f—ing guy out there” pointing to superstar Christian Pulisic. “They’re gonna f—ing come for him,” Turner says.

You wonder if Jamaica employ a similar strategy tonight of hacking the in-form Pulisic to keep him from influencing the match. The U.S. players will be ready, but also have to keep their heads about them, as disciplinary issues ended their Copa America early back in the summer.

“protect this fvcking guy out there okay? they’re gonna fvcking come for him. idgaf that it’s a friendly. protect him and lift each other.” I’m gonna cry bye pic.twitter.com/8xhDd7khjY

— ًًً (@_captainpulisic) November 14, 20241 hour 45 mins to kick: Antonee Robinson is one of the most in-form USMNT players at the moment, and this match will mean a lot to him personally. Jedi was born in the UK, and not only has U.S. roots thanks to his father’s upbringing in New York, but also Jamaican background through his paternal grandfather.

He spoke to Turner about his ties to Jamaica ahead of this match, although in truth his adorable kids steal the show throughout the interview.

— B/R Football (@brfootball) November 14, 20242 hours to kickoff: With Folarin Balogun and Josh Sargent both out injured, it’s likely that Ricardo Pepi will get the start up front for the United States tonight. Pepi has good history against the Reggae Boyz, scoring a brace against Jamaica back in 2021 on just his second international cap.

Pepi is in good goal-scoring form for his club PSV, netting seven this season despite only holding a fringe role as a super sub, stuck behind regular starter Luuk de Jong. Yet he has scored in each of his three league starts thus far, with five goals in those three games, prompting a mention from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday who notes that he could be a January option for clubs needing a striker.

Jamaica vs. USA lineups, team news, starting 11The big news for Jamaica is the return of Leon Bailey, who had been at odds with the federation and not been called in since being left off the Copa America roster. The Aston Villa man is back for this month’s fixtures.

One Premier League player not appearing is experienced winger Bobby Decordova-Reid, who has failed to secure a starting spot in his first season with Leicester City. Michail Antonio remains a key figure up front for Jamaica despite just one goal and one assist for West Ham this season.

The United States have a number of stars back in action but are still missing a few struggling with injuries.

Chris Richards has been out with a hamstring issue for the last month, missing the October international break, but he has returned to the roster here after being on the bench against Fulham on the weekend. Haji Wright appeared to roll his ankle badly in the 2-2 draw with Sunderland on Saturday and was left off the roster after being seen on crutches following the match. Folarin Balogun and Josh Sargent are both missing with injuries, leaving the attacking ranks thinned a bit. The latter is not expected back until next year following groin surgery.

Tyler Adams finally made his first start of the season for Bournemouth on Saturday, having missed the early portion of the campaign, but the USMNT coaching staff do not wish to risk an injury-prone player until he proves he can handle a full load of matches for club and country.

Sergino Dest continues to recover from his ACL tear just before the summer and isn’t expected back until at least the start of 2025. Gio Reyna suffered a muscle injury in training during the September international break and has not yet returned for Borussia Dortmund.

Tim Weah is suspended for the first of these two matches as a result of his red card against Panama in the Copa America. He served the first of his two-game ban in the final group game against Uruguay, so he will be eligible to return for the second leg next week.

USA predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Turner (GK) — Scally, Richards, Ream, A. Robinson — Musah, McKennie, Tillman — Weah, Pepi, Pulisic.
