Jason Cundy attempts to calm raging talkSPORT co-host with reason why England will be better against elite teams

Only the soothing words of Jason Cundy could calm down an enraged Jamie O’Hara after England’s bore draw against Slovenia on Tuesday.

England are through to the knockout stages of Euro 2024, topping their group and earning themselves a spot on the ‘easier’ side of the draw away from Germany, Spain and Portugal.

Sports Bar hosts Cundy and O’Hara debated the performance against Slovenia on Tuesday night on talkSPORT as a nation tried to come to terms with what they had just seen.

Cundy insisted that better teams would give England more space to play as they will look to attack, rather than sit back as Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia have done in the group stage.

With the Three Lions likely to face the Netherlands in the first knockout round, Cundy told a raging O’Hara: “The team that we played [on Tuesday] and the teams we played going into the European Championship – Bosnia, Iceland – are all very similar.

O’Hara appeared unconvinced and struggled to keep calm as the fan in him got frustrated during the 90 minutes against Slovenia and at one point walked out of the watchalong he was taking part in on.

However, Cundy continued: “You think I am clutching at straws? What I am saying is we will have more chance to attack.

“Conversely, though, they will cause us more problems. [Jordan] Pickford has done nothing. How do you beat England?

“Because I have seen nothing to suggest that any team can score against us.”

England could face the Netherlands in the next roundO’Hara interjected: “Because no one has had a go against us!”

Smirking, Cundy replied: “Right. There you go.”

But O’Hara was still not having it, hitting back: “As soon as someone has a go at us, we will fold. Like a deck of cards.”

And the Three Lions made history with their drab draw against Slovenia – for all the wrong reasons.

Nevertheless, England are through to the knockout stages and the dream is very much still on to go one further than their last appearance at the European Championship.
