JD Vance, Who Knows So Much About Women, Claims Most People Don’t Care What Taylor Swift Thinks
It’s now been approximately two days since Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Obviously, the Harris campaign is thrilled to have the backing of one of the most famous and influential people in the world—but how’s the competition taking the news? Not great, if the reactions of the two men on the ticket are anything to go by!
Following Donald Trump’s eye-roll-inducing claim that he has always liked Brittany Mahomes better than Swift, JD Vance, his running mate, boldly declared that “most Americans” will not be be swayed by the wildly popular pop-star’s endorsement.
In an interview on Fox News, Martha MacCallum noted that Swift has more than 283 million followers on Instagram—where Swift announced her plans to vote for Harris and signed the post “childless cat lady”—and asked Vance, “How do you speak to women voters who, obviously, they care about what she thinks?” His response? “We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music or [are] fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans,” Vance said. “Look, when grocery prices go up by 20%, it hurts most Americans—it doesn’t hurt Taylor Swift. When housing prices become unaffordable, it doesn’t affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire. It does affect middle-class Americans all over our country.”
Vance’s comments are deeply rich on multiple levels, the first one being that Swift is an out-of-touch “billionaire celebrity,” a description that literally describes Donald Trump. As for whether or not people will be influenced to vote for Harris, that remains to be seen, though so far his theory does not appear to be entirely sound. On Thursday, The New York Times reported that Swift’s Instagram post, which encouraged her followers to register to vote and directed them to a vote.gov link in her stories to do so, led approximately 406,000 people to click on the link within 24 hours. The post, in which Swift wrote that she is voting for Harris because the VP “fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” has been liked more than 10 million times. Oh, and after the singer endorsed Joe Biden in 2020, he went on to win the election, beating Trump. Was her support what pushed him across the line? Unclear, but it probably didn’t hurt—which is perhaps why, in August, Trump used AI images to falsely claim Swift had endorsed him.
