Jennifer Lawrence, deliver us from whomever runs the AC in these New York buildings.

Lawrence stepped out in New York City this week where the weather has been, shall we say, spicy, wearing what appears to be a very breezy slip skirt, a red silk button-up top, and a black mesh duster cardigan. She brought along her $30,000 alligator Lady Bag from The Row and a pair of Eva ballet flats, also from The Row, because Lawrence is nothing if not a loyal customer. (See the photo here.)

There’s a chance the skirt might actually be a dress, as the actor stepped out in a similar lace-trimmed slip earlier this month.

Not to get too pedantic about it, but her latest look presents a wonderful learning opportunity for those of us looking to ace the art of dressing for this suffocating heat. On the one hand, with temperatures hitting record-breaking highs in New York City, ventilation is key. Dresses, skirts, wide-leg silhouettes, pantaloons—all are great options for allowing what few breezes pass through the city to access, uh, restricted areas. But the true sign of a seasoned hot weather dresser is light layers, and lots of them.

There is nothing worse than arriving at your final destination—your clothes damp from sweat, beads of perspiration running down your everything—only to be instantly chilled by air conditioners set to “meat locker.” The whiplash feels like a cold plunge you didn’t consent to, but thankfully, a mesh cardigan and thin silk shirt can keep bare arms from freezing solid, as I’m sure Jennifer Lawrence can attest.

Thankfully, long, knit, or sheer cardigans like Lawrence’s are so hot right now, pun intended, and a must-have for transitional summer dressing (the transition being from outdoors to indoors). Shop a few of Glamour’s picks below.
