Jerry Jones awkwardly gets Micah Parsons’ name wrong as Cowboys star calls out $17bn Dallas owner

Dallas Cowboys training camp has only just kicked off, but the circus is already in full swing.

Micah Parsons, one of the NFL’s star pass rushers, has long been locked in a contract dispute with Jerry Jones — and it seems the situation is far from resolved.

The team’s president and owner Jones, who is worth $17.3bn, has been reluctant to pay.

He made headlines for all the wrong reasons on Monday, calling out Parsons during a press conference at the start of camp.

Jones continued: “Contracts are four, five years, OK? There’s a lot of water under the bridge if you step out there and do something in the first two or three.

“You can get hit by a car, seriously. So there’s a lot to look at over a lot of years that could make a big difference. Have you ever heard of any clubs committing to players and then they didn’t pan out after they committed to them? We have.”

He then pointed to franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, who missed more than half of the 2024 season after inking a four-year, $240m extension on the eve of opening weekend.

“I remember signing a player for the highest-paid position in the league and he got knocked out two-thirds of the year — Dak Prescott,” the owner of America’s Team said.

“So there’s a lot of things you can think about, just as the player does, when you’re thinking about committing and guaranteeing money.”

Parsons’ future is unclear as he awaits a long-term contract extension in DallasCredit: GettyJones awkwardly gets Micah Parsons’ name wrongIf taking shots at his star QB and best defensive player wasn’t bad enough, another comment added further insult to injury.

As he discussed Parsons and his contract situation, Jones referred to the two-time All-Pro defensive end as ‘Michael’ instead of ‘Micah’.

He told reporters: “Of all the players that I’ve ever negotiated with, Michael Parsons is as savvy, and knowledgeable, and understanding of his financial business — relative to football — as any player I’ve ever been around.

“He’s smart.”

While Jones perhaps intended to pay the 26-year-old a compliment, getting his name wrong won’t help the situation.

Speaking on the practice field, he admitted there has ‘not been much movement’ in contract talks.

“I mean, honest, there’s not really much movement, man,” Parsons said.

“You know, I want to be here. I’ve always said I want to be here.

“But at the end of the day, they sign the checks like always, and let’s see if they want me to be here at the end of the day.”

Parsons is heading into the final season of his five-year rookie contract after being drafted 12th overall by the Cowboys in 2021.

He could be placed under the franchise tag next season, without a new deal in place.

The defensive star has participated in offseason workouts this summer, deciding not to hold out to put pressure on the team to get a deal done.

Parsons reported to camp Monday, and worked out on a limited basis with the team as it started practicing on Tuesday.
