Jimmy Kimmel’s Late-Night Show Returning After Suspension
Jimmy Kimmel is returning to TV.Â
ABC shared that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will resume on Sept. 23, six days following the news that the late-night show was being indefinitely suspended due to comments Jimmy made about Charlie Kirkâs death.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” the network said in a Sept. 22 statement to NBC News. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.”
But ABC and Kimmel have since discussed the initial choice at length. As the network put it, “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
The halt on Kimmelâs show was confirmed by ABC on Sept. 17, two days after the 57-year-old addressed the discourse around Kirkâs death, specifically tied to the individual suspected of his murder, Tyler Robinson.
âThe MAGA gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,â Kimmel said during his Sept. 15 monologue, âand doing everything they can to score political points from it.â
Robinson, 22, was taken into custody on Sept. 12 after turning himself in, authorities said. Heâs been charged with aggravated murder of Kirk, 31, during the debaterâs Sept. 10 event at Utah Valley University.Â
In the days following the arrest, authorities released alleged text messages sent by Robinson in which he said he targeted Kirk after having âhad enough of his hatred.â
Prior to Kimmelâs removal from the air, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Brendan Carr slammed the hostâs monologue, referring to it as âthe sickest conduct possible.â Elsewhere in the interview, Carr noted the FCC could âtake actionâ against ABC and parent company Disney, as it has the authority to revoke local ABC affiliate licenses.Â

Shortly after, Nexstar Media Group Inc.âwhich owns more than 200 TV stations in the United Statesâannounced its ABC affiliates would âpreempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future,â beginning with that nightâs Sept. 17 episode. ABC then pulled the show altogether.Â
Prior to his Sept. 15 monologue, Kimmel had shared a statement regarding Kirkâs death in which he shared a plea with the nation.Â
âInstead of the angry finger-pointing,â he wrote on Instagram Sept. 10, âcan we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?â

The comedianâwho is dad to fourâalso shared his condolences for Kirkâs family, including the Turning Point USA cofounderâs wife Erika Kirk and their two children.Â
âOn behalf of my family,â he added, âwe send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.â
