Jimmy Kimmel’s Late-Night Show Returning After Suspension

Jimmy Kimmel is returning to TV.

ABC shared that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will resume on Sept. 23, six days following the news that the late-night show was being indefinitely suspended due to comments Jimmy made about Charlie Kirk’s death.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” the network said in a Sept. 22 statement to NBC News. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.”

But ABC and Kimmel have since discussed the initial choice at length. As the network put it, “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

The halt on Kimmel’s show was confirmed by ABC on Sept. 17, two days after the 57-year-old addressed the discourse around Kirk’s death, specifically tied to the individual suspected of his murder, Tyler Robinson.

“The MAGA gang [is] desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said during his Sept. 15 monologue, “and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

Robinson, 22, was taken into custody on Sept. 12 after turning himself in, authorities said. He’s been charged with aggravated murder of Kirk, 31, during the debater’s Sept. 10 event at Utah Valley University.

In the days following the arrest, authorities released alleged text messages sent by Robinson in which he said he targeted Kirk after having “had enough of his hatred.”

Prior to Kimmel’s removal from the air, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Brendan Carr slammed the host’s monologue, referring to it as “the sickest conduct possible.” Elsewhere in the interview, Carr noted the FCC could “take action” against ABC and parent company Disney, as it has the authority to revoke local ABC affiliate licenses.

Shortly after, Nexstar Media Group Inc.—which owns more than 200 TV stations in the United States—announced its ABC affiliates would “preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future,” beginning with that night’s Sept. 17 episode. ABC then pulled the show altogether.

Prior to his Sept. 15 monologue, Kimmel had shared a statement regarding Kirk’s death in which he shared a plea with the nation.

“Instead of the angry finger-pointing,” he wrote on Instagram Sept. 10, “can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?”

The comedian—who is dad to four—also shared his condolences for Kirk’s family, including the Turning Point USA cofounder’s wife Erika Kirk and their two children.

“On behalf of my family,” he added, “we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

On behalf of him and his wife Michelle Obama, the former president said that his heart went out to Kirk’s loved ones.

“We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy,” she wrote on X. “Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.”

The former vice president shared that she and her husband Doug Emhoff were “deeply disturbed” by the fatal shooting of Kirk, who co-founded the conservative youth advocacy group Turning Point USA.

“Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family,” Harris wrote on X. “Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.”

The political commentator broke down in tears while sharing her memories with Kirk over the years, starting when she worked with him at Turning Point USA.

“There’s not a single person in the world that I would wish that on, and least of all someone with a heart like Charlie’s,” she shared in a YouTube video Sept. 11. “He loved his family. He loved his wife. He loved his country. And he didn’t deserve that ending.”

Owens continued, “We will carry the torch. I will never allow the memory of Charlie to be forgotten, obviously, because there is no Candace without Charlie. We came up in politics together. I don’t know what else to say other than I’m in a lot of pain right now.”

The 47-year-old son of President Trump and his late ex Ivana Trump detailed his incredibly close bond with Kirk in a length tribute.

“Charlie wasn’t just a friend—he was like a little brother to me—and to millions of people around the world,” he explained on X. “He was a true inspiration.”

“We’ve lost a leader, a fighter, and a man whose character and conviction were rare. Too rare,” Trump Jr. added. “To think that his life was cut short by a brutal, heinous, evil act is beyond comprehension. It is horrible and it is heartbreaking.”

After the tragedy, the former POTUS spoke out against the violent attack.

“It happened on a college campus, where the open exchange of opposing ideas should be sacrosanct,” Bush shared in a statement. “Violence and vitriol must be purged from the public square. Members of other political parties are not our enemies; they are our fellow citizens.”

He added, “May God bless Charlie Kirk and his family, and may God guide America toward civility.”
