Joe Douglas fired: Jets dismiss former Eagles executive

The New York Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.

This news comes after the Jets fired Robert Saleh last month. Since then, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich has gone 1-5. What a mess that team is.

Douglas was originally hired by the Jets in June 2019. Prior to that, he served as the Philadelphia Eagles’ vice president of player personnel since 2016.

The Eagles hired Douglas to be the top “football guy” to pair with Howie Roseman as the latter was reinstated following Chip Kelly’s coup. Douglas contributed to the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII victory season in 2017.

Douglas obviously failed to replicate success in North Jersey with the Jets going 30-64 during his time there. He ultimately never managed to get the quarterback position right, which is kind of a big deal. The Jets’ ownership being bad is also kind of a problem.

Now that he’s unemployed, Douglas will likely be looking for a new (old?) landing spot. Is a return to Philly in the cards? Jeffrey Lurie has talked about the importance of Roseman stocking the front office pipeline. But perhaps a return to Baltimore, where Douglas spent 15 seasons, is more likely. Or he could reunite with old friend Andy Weidl on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for Douglas.
