Key Takeaways:
Joey Bada$$ clarifies that his âWest Coastâ lyric was a JAY-Z homage, not a diss.
He and Ab-Soul spoke privately and agreed the line was not meant as disrespect.
Joey believes social media and stan culture exaggerated the tension into a full-blown rap beef.
Joey Bada$$ says the internet made way too much out of his West Coast line on âThe Rulerâs Back,â which dropped during his feud with Ray Vaughn. On Friday (Sept. 5), he revisited the moment during the âNew Rory & Malâ podcast, even revealing that he checked in with Ab-Soul about it.
The 1999 rapper really didnât think the âToo much West Coast d**k lickin’ / I’m hearin’ n**gas throwin’ rocks, really ain’t s**t stickin’â bar would amount to much, especially since it was borrowed from JAY-Z. Joey explained, âIt ainât like I said, âYo, f**k the West Coast.ââ He added that Ab-Soul also felt it wasnât that big of a deal.
Reflecting on his conversation with the âDO BETTERâ artist, Joey mentioned they talked for â10, 15 minutesâ and laughed about the whole thing. âIâm like, âFor real, you took any disrespect from that?â Heâs like, âNah, n**ga, n**gas was rapping.â His favorite thing to say is, âYou in the gym,ââ Joey said.
In the Brooklyn nativeâs opinion, what really blew the lines out of proportion was social media and stan culture. âThe internet nowadays fuels s**t,â he explained. âThis narrative started developing and when the narrative started developing, I was like, âOK, somebodyâs going to take this bait.ââ
âI honestly wasnât prepared,â Joey admitted. âI rolled with the punches.â Check out the clip below.
As most fans know, Vaughn responded to âThe Rulerâs Backâ with âCrashout Heritage,â which sampled Kendrick Lamarâs âheart pt. 6.â That record set off a string of back-and-forth shots, with both sides trading jabs on tracks like âImpossible Patty,â âPardon Me,â âH** Era,â âTHE FINALSâ and more.
Joey and Ab-Soul are set to hit the road together in October for their âDark Aura Tourâ alongside Rapsody. See the flyer below.
