Jofra Archer breaks own record as England and India set up stunning finish to third Test

Jofra Archer managed to break his own record as England and India head into the second innings level after a tense day three.

The England star managed to record his fastest-ever over in Test cricket, reaching an average speed of 90.28mph.

And on day three, he hit a personal milestone, and the Test is well in the balance with both sides on 387 after their first innings.

KL Rahul hit a century and Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja scored 50s to set up a shootout at Lord’s.

And a good-natured series threatened to boil over in the last over of the day with India angry at Zak Crawley’s delaying tactics with the England opener keen to prevent more than one over being bowled.

Little had happened in the field up until that point as India added 103 to their score on a pitch described as turgid the night before by Joe Root.

On a couple of occasions, Pant seemed to still be struggling with the finger injury that he had picked up on day one, but it didn’t stop him playing his usual experimental style of batting with attempted reverse sweeps against Chris Woakes and two big sixes from Shoaib Bashir.

Bashir claimed the only wicket to fall in the afternoon session, taking the edge from Rahul’s bat soon after the Indian opener had reached his 10th Test century.

However, shortly after this he was forced from the field as he injured his left small finger trying to take a fierce caught and bowled chance from Nitish Reddy.

Ollie Pope spurned both chances before the batter had got off the mark.

But after that moment India put on another valuable partnership to avoid the possibility of falling well short of England’s first innings.

Reddy (30) edged behind from Stokes but Washington Sundar (23) continued the resistance with Jadeja’s (72) another highlight.

Just when it seemed India would bat through to day four and pick up a small first innings lead Chris Woakes nipped out a couple of late ones with India bowled out for exactly the same score as England.

England then came out to bat with five minutes remaining in the day and to India’s displeasure Crawley made sure England would only face six deliveries. England ending it 2/0 and still with all three results possible with two days to go.
