John McEnroe makes brutal Rory McIlroy comment as he watches US Open semi-final between Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe

Rory McIlory was in the crowd for the US Open semi-final and John McEnroe delivered a classic off-the-cuff line on commentary.

McIlroy was among the thousands packed into Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis arena in the world to watch Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe battle it out.

McIlroy watched on at the US OpenThe two Americans went toe-to-toe for a chance to play Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final, who beat Britain’s Jack Draper earlier in the day.

The cameras panned to four-time major winner McIlroy with ESPN commentator Chris Fowler remarking: “Multiple winner Rory McIlroy.”

Quick as a flash, John McEnroe replied: “Been a long time though.”

Read more on US OpenIt has indeed been a long time since the 35-year-old won a major title.

It has been 10 years since he won the PGA Championship and The Open in the same season.

He has come agonisingly close to glory, though, making eight top 10 finishes in the last three seasons.

The one still missing from his collection is The Masters, finishing second in 2022.

McEnroe himself knows a thing or two about winning, having secured seven Grand Slam singles title across his career.

This included three at Wimbledon and four at the US Open.

Tiafoe and Fritz battled for a place in the finalCredit: GettyFritz and Tiafoe meeting in the semi-final meant there would be a guaranteed American man in the final for the first time since Andy Roddick in 2006.

Roddick was the last US man to lift the title back in 2003.

One of Fritz or Tiafoe will join a long list of great American male players to lift the title on home soil.
