Kate Middleton Will Continue Her Annual Wimbledon Tradition in Person Amid Cancer Treatments

Kate Middleton will make a rare public appearance to present the trophy to the winner of Wimbledon’s Gentlemen’s Singles Final, it has been announced.

The Princess of Wales has made just one public appearance since she revealed her cancer diagnosis in March, attending Trooping the Colour in June along with other members of the royal family. In the weeks since, she has released a number of messages on social media, and is thought to have been quietly picking up some work meetings while recovering out of the public eye.

Now, she will return to public engagements once again as she hands over the prize to either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz in SW19, Kensington Palace said. However, she will not attend the Women’s Singles Final on July 13.

In a touching statement released prior to Kate Middleton’s triumphant return to public-facing duties at Trooping the Colour last month, she explained that she is ā€œnot out of the woods yetā€ when it comes to her cancer treatment, but expressed her ā€œhope to join a few public engagements over the summer.ā€

While the Palace has not confirmed which events the Princess will be attending through this busiest of royal seasonsā€“she herself reminded supporters that she has “good days and not so good days”ā€“Wimbledon is known to be one of Middleton’s most treasured traditions. As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the royal mother-of-three is synonymous with the Wimbledon tennis championships and a staple at the trophy ceremony.

There is great tradition when it comes to royals awarding the trophies at Wimbledon. King George VI handed out the silverware in 1947, having himself played at the championships as the Duke of York, and Queen Elizabeth II gave the Venus Rosewater Dish to British player Virginia Wade, whose Centre Court triumph coincided with the year of the Queenā€™s Silver Jubilee.

Recently, sources spoke of how challenging the last few months have been for the Princess and her family, telling Vanity Fair the Wales’s had had a ā€œterribly hard time.ā€ While plans for the Princess to return to life as a full-time working royal remain up in the air, aides said Kate Middleton plans to ā€œpick up where she left offā€ as soon she is well enough.
