Kevin Durant Breaks Silence On Potential Reunion With Free Agent Russell Westbrook
With Russell Westbrookās future in the NBA a question in many basketball fansā minds, Kevin Durant discussed the subject and the idea of a potential reunion with his former teammate.
Although Durant has played alongside many superstars in his career, an argument could be made that he is best remembered for his time with Westbrook on the Oklahoma City Thunder. While the young squad was never able to win an NBA championship, it did make it all the way to the Finals in 2012, falling short to LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
In 2016, Durant and Westbrook lost to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference finals, and Durant made the infamous decision to leave the Thunder to join the Warriors, which caused a fair amount of drama at the time.
With Westbrook still a free agent after declining his player option with the Denver Nuggets, Durant, now a Houston Rocket, spoke about potentially reuniting with Westbrook.
What Did Kevin Durant Say About a Possible Reunion With Russell Westbrook?
While Westbrook established an undeniable legacy for himself during his time with the Thunder, he has been traded multiple times over the past few years and has played for teams such as the Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets.
Westbrookās stint with the Rockets paired him alongside another former Thunder teammate, James Harden. Although Harden is no longer with the Rockets, the team now looks very different, and with Fred VanVleet suffering an ACL injury, reports revealed that they were considering acquiring Westbrook.
When Durant was asked about the same, he denied having obtained any knowledge about a deal of that nature. However, the two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP did not hold back his praise, sharingĀ his opinion on Westbrookās future in the league.
āIt hasnāt been brought to my desk at all, and usually when stuff like that happens, itās pretty loud. But I havenāt really heard it outside of like fans on the internet,ā Durant said on the āUp & Adamsā show.
āRuss is a legend⦠That would be dope.ā

Durant was then asked if he would be ācoolā with playing alongside Westbrook once again. āYeah! Russ is a legend. He deserves to be in the NBA right now, and I think he deserves to walk out of the NBA on his terms,ā Durant responded. āSo yeah, that would be dope, but itās not my decision. Iām leaving that up to whoever makes those decisions for now.ā
Since the Rockets have a young core and appear to be committed to building around Durant, it would make little sense to bring in Westbrook at this point. However, there are still a few teams across the league that should consider adding him to the roster on a veteran minimum contract, as the Nuggets did.
Although Westbrook might not be the star he used to be, there is no denying that he is one of the top point guards of the modern generation. Any young guard would benefit immensely from his leadership and guidance. Fans are left wondering if the Rockets, or any other team, will give Westbrook another chance heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
