Kim Kardashian’s Greatest Quotes About Motherhood

Kim Kardashian and now-ex Kanye West started growing their family in 2013, and the reality star has been gushing about her children ever since.

The former couple, who began living separately in 2020 before she filed for divorce in February 2021, first welcomed their daughter North, followed by Saint in 2015 and Chicago three years later. Psalm arrived in 2019. While Kardashian carried her first two babies, she welcomed her third and fourth via surrogate at the advice of her doctors.

Kardashian suffered from placenta accreta, which is when the placenta attaches too deep in the uterine wall, during her pregnancies with North and Saith.

“I had something called placenta accreta where the placenta grows inside your uterus,” she said on Laura Wasser’s “All Fair” podcast in 2020. “It’s honestly what people would die from in childbirth, so you have to get the placenta out within a certain amount of time and you just can internally bleed.”

She added, “So, there’s no choice — this is so graphic and gross — but he had to literally cut the placenta off with his hands, with his fingernails, inside of you. And it left a hole in my uterus, and so that muscle doesn’t grow back.”

The Primary Parent

“Sometimes in the middle of the night, when they’re all sleeping in your bed kicking you and crying and waking up — it’s not something that I talk about a lot because I feel like there is always a lot of judgment,” Kardashian said on a 2024 episode of the “What the Winkler?” podcast. “Or people always will jump to the, ‘Oh, but you have the resources to have nannies and to have help.’ And I just think that no matter what kind of help I have, I’m basically raising four kids by myself.”

Coparenting Challenges

In December 2022, Kardashian made a rare comment about protecting her kids from West’s controversial social media behavior.

“I am holding on by a thread. I know that I am so close to that not happening, but while it is still that way, I will protect that to the end of the Earth as long as I can. My kids don’t know anything,” she explained on the “Angie Martinez IRL” podcast. “I definitely protected him, and I still will in the eyes of my kids. For my kids. So, in my home, my kids don’t know anything that goes on [in] the outside world.”

Baby Book Extraordinaire

In a segment for Vogue’s “Objects of My Affection” series in February 2022, Kardashian showed off identical cream scrapbooks that she makes for each of her four children.

“I make the most epic baby books for them,” the mogul said. “If anyone knows me, they know that I love to scrapbook so that my kids can have the most amazing memories. … I have all of their little hospital details. I’ve written out mom and dad’s history [and North’s] first Vogue shoot, everyone that visited her, her sonograms, what I ate the whole pregnancy.”

She showed how her baby books contained screenshots of Instagram announcements as well. “Each kid has their own book, [with] pictures from their baby showers to how their birth announcement was,” she explained. “It’s so interesting. You’ll see emojis were such a thing for Saint.”

Big Kid

“Who intimidates me? I was going to say politicians, but they don’t. Maybe just my daughter, North,” the Selfish author joked in a December 2021 podcast episode with Bari Weiss.

Hair Care

North often requests to do “matching” hairstyles with her mom, the makeup mogul told i-D in December 2021, explaining, “I’ve had these conversations with her that are like, ‘Hey, maybe this hairstyle would be better on you and not on me.’ But I also want her to feel that I can do a hairstyle with her and not make it that big of deal either if that’s something that she’s really asking for and really wants.”

Cue the Criticism

“Every time I get into some kind of disagreement with North, she’ll say, ‘Your house is so ugly. It’s so white. Who lives like this?’” Kim said in an October 2021 “Mom Confessions” with Ellen DeGeneres. “She thinks it gets to me, and it is kind of mean. I love my house.”

Teen Time

“North and Chi please be easy on me when you’re the age I was in theses pics,” Kim jokingly captioned photos from her teen years in September 2021.

Distinct Darlings

The Skims creator called her kids “so different” in a September 2021 Ellen DeGeneres Show appearance, explaining, “[Chicago] is my girliest girl that loves pink and purple and makeup. Chi Chi is my little princess. Anything princess, anything girly girl. … Saint is, like, a video game tech whiz, amazing. Psalm is really into Paw Patrol and cars. … [North is] into Hot Topic. She puts fake tattoos on her face, and she listens to Black Sabbath. She’s just, like, a full goth girl.”

Calling Her Out

North interrupted one of her mom’s September 2021 Instagram Stories to accuse the reality star of “talk[ing] different” to her social media followers. Kardashian replied, “I don’t talk different, I am the same human being. … Get out of my video! Guys, do you think I talk different when I talk about contour?”

Moment of Reflection

Since Kardashian was “embarrassed to go to the gym” after giving birth to North in 2013, she worked out in her mom’s garage, the Selfish author said during an August 2021 “We Are Supported By…” podcast episode. “It was literally probably 115 degrees in Calabasas in the summertime,” she explained. “I’d have my daughter in a stroller, and I’d sit her in there and just work out in the garage and try to do anything I could.”

Ups and Downs

“They get along so well and have so much love for each other,” Kim told Parents magazine of her four children in August 2021. “It reminds me of growing up with Kourtney, Khloé and Rob. There’s something so special about having a big family, and I’m happy my babies get that experience the way I did.”

She added that the hardest part of being a mother of four is “keeping their rooms neat and organized, especially their closets.”

Little Look-Alikes

“What’s crazy is I don’t really see that but everyone says it!” Kardashian told a Twitter user in August 2021 who said she looks like daughter Chicago. The Selfish author went on to call Saint her “twin,” not West’s.

Not Ready to Tell All

During a May 2021 clip from the final season of KUWTK, the reality star admitted she was “hesitant” to explain every aspect of her past to her kids — especially not her brief marriage to Kris Humphries. “I’d rather do it with [them],” she said. “I’d rather be that parent. But I’m just not ready.”

Slowing Her Roll

“Just the amount of time that me and all my parent friends have all spent with our children has been so beautiful that we get this time,” Kardashian said of parenting during the pandemic in a March 2021 Good Morning Vogue appearance. “I always try to look at things in a positive way. Even though it has been such a challenging year, it’s a time to regenerate, get creative, spend so much time with family. Just this time I’ve been able to spend with my children has been priceless.”

Sweet Psalm

“The sweetest boy!” the Skims creator captioned a February 2021 Instagram photo of her youngest son. “You can’t tell here but he has the most infectious smile! I love you baby Psalm.”

Stage Mom

After North sang at West’s Yeezy show in a September 2020 KUWTK episode, Kardashian gushed, “She obviously gets that [confidence] from her dad, and it just makes me so happy that she’s not afraid to try anything. That, to me, was just so fun to see. She’s just fearless, and I love that about her. I’m such a proud mom.”

Movie Nights

“We’re in the theater room. That’s the place that has gotten the most use lately,” Kardashian told Vogue in April 2020. “The whole family has spent the last few nights in there after the kids made it into a fort, with, like, different beds all over the floor. My daughter is the fort police. If you move out of your bed that she designated for you, it’s a problem.”

Fun With Folders

“The best thing I’ve been doing is organizing all of the pictures in my phone and making folders for each of my children,” Kardashian captioned an April 2020 Instagram photo of her youngest daughter stacking blocks.

No Escape

“She’s running the house [during quarantine], or so she thinks she is,” Kardashian hilariously told Refinery29 in April 2020 of her eldest daughter. “I cannot get away from her.”

Moment of Silence

The Selfish author confessed in April 2020 that she was hiding in her guest room. “My kids will not leave me alone,” she explained while applying her makeup in an Instagram video. “Every night I have at least two kids with me. Either both girls — Psalm is in a crib — but I’ll either have [Chicago] and North, or Saint and North or just me and Saint while we all are quarantined.”

Calling It Quits

“Being at home with four kids — if I ever thought for a minute that I wanted another one, that is out the door,” the E! personality said during a virtual View appearance during the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. “It’s really tough.”

Message for Mom

“I love how my kids leave me notes for my meetings,” Kardashian captioned her February 2020 Instagram Story. She showed off the handwritten message reading, “I love you mom.”

Miracle Baby

In February 2020, Kardashian described her first pregnancy on Laura Wasser’s “All Fair” podcast, explaining, “I went in and there was no heartbeat and [the doctor] said, ‘Oh, you had a miscarriage.’ And then Thanksgiving morning I came in to do [a D&C] and he said, ‘There’s a heartbeat.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, my God. This is a sign, it’s Thanksgiving morning.’ So we ended up, obviously, having North.”

All Set

“I could do two more, but I just don’t think I should,” Kardashian went on to tell Wasser. “I just can’t do more ’cause I really want to go to school and I really want to do all this stuff. I’d have to go through [in vitro fertilization]. I’m gonna turn 40 — I don’t want to be an old mom. I think four’s good. … I want to pay attention. I think everyone needs attention. And just seeing how my mom, [Kris Jenner], is 64 and we still don’t stop bugging her … at [almost] 40, I’m calling her daily, all day long.”

Social Media Star

“North has a private Tik Tok account, so we do lots of TikToks together, and she puts them in drafts,” the Skims creator told Entertainment Tonight of her eldest daughter in February 2020. “She’s not allowed to post them, but we have a lot of TikToks.”

Fun in February

“We’ve already made all their Valentine’s and done all that stuff for school,” the California native told E! News in February 2020. “Valentine’s Day every year, I volunteer at school and I’m the class mom because they love that. They make cupcakes, and it’s a whole thing.”

Pretty Please

North “begs” her mom to get a job at her school, Kardashian went on to say. “She is so upset about it because her best friend’s mom is the P.E. coach and she’s one of my closest friends,” the Selfish author told the outlet. “I’ve tried to explain to her, ‘Well, what happens when you move grades? I’m gonna be stuck in this grade. I can’t keep going with you to every grade.’”

Full Circle

After multiple people told the Skims creator that her fourth child is her late father, Robert Kardashian Sr., reincarnated, Kardashian is on board — and so is the rest of her family. “He’s left-handed like my dad,” she explained. “I don’t even know if I believe in reincarnation, but I do now. But I want to believe it!”

Micromanaged

“I get up at 5:40, am in the gym by 6 and done by 7,” Kardashian said of her family’s strict schedule during a February 2020 Good Morning America appearance. “They wake up, I get them at 7:05. Breakfast at 7:30, out the door by 7:55.”

Leading By Example

“Every time I have a prison visit, I explain to [my kids] why I’m going and what I’m doing,” the Skims creator told Us and other reporters in January 2020, adding that this shows North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm “how motivated” she is.

Not Easy

The Selfish author takes care of her big brood by being “super planned out [and] really, really organized,” she told Kylie Jenner in a January 2020 YouTube video. The KKW Beauty creator explained, “I think that’s the key to just being successful. It’s hard, it’s a lot of work, but you can totally do it.”

Trimming

“My schedule has really changed,” Kardashian told Us and other reporters in January 2020 of balancing her law studies with her family. “Obviously, my kids and my husband are my life, so I just had to cut out a lot of all the extra stuff that I was doing and the friends [I had]. I’m best friends with all my friends I’ve been friends with forever, but they understand. They know I just don’t go to all these events anymore, the movies. I don’t do that extra stuff, and that’s OK for me.”

Something to Celebrate

“Happy Birthday my sweet baby girl Chicago!!!” the makeup mogul captioned a January 2020 Instagram upload. “I can’t believe you are already 2! You bring so much joy into our lives. I love watching you grow every day! My smart, sassy and silly girl! Mommy loves you forever!”

The Struggle

“It’s the most anxiety to get four kids together smiling in a room,” the Skims creator told Ellen DeGeneres in December 2019 of her “dramatic” Christmas card photoshoot. Her eldest ended up Photoshopped into the picture after “refus[ing]” to participate.

Spilling Her Secrets

She went on to say that she and West let their kids “go crazy” in their bedrooms and the playroom so that they “respect” the rest of the house.

Giving Thanks

“I’m so thankful for my beautiful kids, no matter how they came to me — they came to me. I’m so thankful for surrogates,” the Los Angeles native gushed during a December 2019 Skims video describing her eldest two children’s dangerous births. “I’m really thankful for my family. I grew up with so many siblings. I just loved being in a big environment. I would have gone through the same pain and back for the result of having my babies. It was all worth it.”

Proud Parent

“I do the best I can, and I really do believe my children are well adjusted and know they are blessed, but understand to be really compassionate,” the Skims creator said during a December 2019 Sunday Project interview. “They’re really good people, and that is my No. 1 goal in life.”

Cut the Cosmetics

“I don’t think a kid should really be wearing makeup either,” Kardashian continued in response to her husband’s decision to not let North wear any beauty products. “We always have to stay aligned.”

Doing It All

“I go to bed when the kids go to bed,” the makeup mogul explained on Sunrise in November 2019 when asked how she balances her family and career. “I don’t drink, I don’t stay out late at night, so I think that really does help. I just micromanage my day. I know every day I wake up at a specific time, I have my schedule set in stone and I really don’t like to veer off of that. It’s so planned out and with four kids. You just have to be so organized.”

Looking Ahead

“I definitely see how black men are treated in this country … and I’m raising two black men, so I want to make sure that my world and their world is as safe and as fair as possible,” the law student told Jenna Bush Hager while discussing her work in criminal justice reform in November 2019.

Cracking Down

“The kids are getting older,” the E! personality said in a November 2019 episode of The Real. “[West is] very cautious of what we have in the house. He got rid of TVs in the kids’ rooms and removed makeup from North’s room. He’s had this epiphany of being — not that he wasn’t an amazing dad — but being a little bit more strict as a dad and a being more forceful on the imagery that’s in our household and what they see. … There’s that fine line of staying firm and doing what you feel comfortable with, and I take a little bit of him, I respect what he’s saying and totally compromise.”

Cutting Cosmetics

“North is trying to get in on the makeup, but she’s being blocked heavily because her dad has stopped all makeup for her until she is a teenager,” the California native told E! in October 2019. “It’s a big discussion, a big fight in the household right now but it is what’s best. I think as a parent you just learn and figure it out as you go. We realized we didn’t really want her to wear makeup at a young age, but she sees her mom putting on lipstick and lip gloss.”

Worth It

“I just love being a mom,” the reality star said in an October 2019 episode of E! True Hollywood Story. “It’s exhausting, it’s grueling, but it’s the best.”

No More Makeup

“[North] loves makeup, but her dad won’t let her wear it,” the KKW Beauty creator told E! in September 2019. “He changed all the rules. I’d let her wear … a little red for Christmas, or I’d let her do one pop of something. I’d let her, if she [was] wearing a black dress, [do] a black lip. Kylie [Jenner] would give her all of these Lip Kits, so I kind of got in trouble for that.”

Feeling the Love

“My two older kids would fight a little bit and now, since the baby’s here, everyone gets along, everyone loves each other,” she told Entertainment Tonight in September 2019. “I’m rolling with it. It just really is zen. It feels really equal and calm and great. … I feel like they all love each other.”

Positive Outlook

“It’s madness, but the best madness,” the KKW Fragrance creator told The New York Times on Sunday, March 31, of getting ready for baby No. 4’s arrival.

Extra Energy

“My mom would always say about having kids: ‘One is like one, and two are like 20.’ I never really understood that until now,” Kardashian said after welcoming Saint in December 2015. “When I had North, all I did was feed and sleep. This time around, I get no sleep. Every waking second that I’m not with the baby, I’m with North. I actually think the harder parts aren’t with the newborn but with the toddler! I feel like I go into overdrive to give my daughter attention and make her feel loved.”

Learning to Multitask

Having a kid has helped Kardashian become more organized. “Motherhood has helped me figure out how to consolidate and just get things done as quick as possible,” she told Glamour in March 2018.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

“Motherhood is a gift and I know after watching my mom do it, it’s not easy, especially when trying to balance a career,” the KKW Beauty creator said of mom of six Kris Jenner. “I’m honored to follow in her footsteps and make her proud like I am of her.”

Feeling Famous

During an August 2018 radio interview with Big Boy on Real 92.3, Kardashian opened up about the time North asked why their family was famous. “‘I’m like, ‘We have a TV show.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, OK,’” the Kardashian Konfidential author recalled. “That was the first time she was like, ‘Oh!’”

Number One

Despite all of her success, Kardashian is most proud of her babies. “Having my daughter is my biggest achievement,” she tweeted in 2015. “All the things you used to do, you just don’t care about anymore. Your child becomes the #1 priority.”

Credit: Kim Kardashian/Instagram

High Hopes

“Baby number four [is] on the way,” the model told Jimmy Fallon on a February 2019 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “But I was kind of stressing that my house is so full, but I heard that parents of four are the most enlightened and calm of all parents.”

Baring it All

“[Surrogacy] is really different,” the reality star told Entertainment Tonight in November 2017. “Anyone that says or thinks it is just the easy way out is just completely wrong. I think it is so much harder to go through it this way because you are not really in control. … Knowing that I was able to carry my first two babies and not my baby now, it’s hard for me.”

She Means Business

Just because her kids are Kardashians doesn’t mean they’ll have it easy! “I was saying that earlier to my friends, ‘I wonder what [North’s] first job is gonna be,’” the Selfish author told ES magazine in October 2014. “And they were like, ‘What? She’s gonna have a job?’ and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Of course she is.’ She will have to work for what she wants.”

So Sweet

“I’m a completely different person,” Kardashian told Glamour for her June 2015 cover story. “If it all went away, and I was just a mom, I would love my life.”

Keeping Her Priorities Straight

“It is an adjustment trying to balance a career and motherhood for sure, but the key is to prioritize,” Kardashian told parenting blog Romy & the Bunnies in 2014. “You become more selective and work on projects that are so meaningful because you want every other waking moment spent with your family. You have to remember though to make time for yourself. If you feel good, you will be happy in your career and family life and everyone is happy!”

Drawing the Line

“I am a strict mother,” the E! personality admitted to the Daily Mail. “I’m really fun and playful, but I’m really strict on nap time, and sleeping in her own crib. And maybe on weekends, [North will] come and sleep in the bed with us. But … I’m not crazy strict.”

Bring on the Breast-Feeding

“Now that I’m a mom, I’m not that shocked [by breastfeeding in public], especially if you have a few kids and can’t leave to breastfeed one kid in the bathroom while leaving the others at the table,” Kardashian wrote on her app after Saint’s birth. “But I still personally wouldn’t do it, unless it was an emergency situation and I was fully covered.”

Moment of Reflection

“Fun fact about this pic,” Kardashian wrote on her Instagram Story in June 2020. “I just found out I was pregnant with North and made Kanye fly to London for my Kardashian Kollection appearance [because] I was freaking out. He took me out to Hakkasan and then Häagen-Dazs to make me feel better.”

Quality Time Together

“I definitely pick and choose — I have my family trips all the time — but each kid gets at least one trip with me a year,” the beauty mogul explained during season 2 of The Kardashians, which aired in November 2022. “It also shows my daughter the work that I am putting in. There is a whole business behind it so I like to show her that this is still fun for me. Work could be fun.”

She added: “I really wanted to bring North on this trip because I really enjoy what I do. I want my kids to grow up really loving what they do and finding their passion and really figuring out how to make a business out of that.”

Like Mother, Like Daughter

During the season 2 finale of The Kardashians, the aspiring attorney praised her mother, Kris Jenner, for raising her. “It helps me parent and push through,” she said in the November 2022 episode about the momager’s parenting techniques. “I don’t care if I am annoyed, I know it will be beneficial for them later.”
