The New York Knicks have assembled a squad that features some of Villanova’s best alumni, but that doesn’t mean everyone is in on the fun.

Josh Hart, Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo, who were all on the 2015-16 Villanova NCAA Championship team, all helped aid the New York Knicks to a 105-93 victory over the Brooklyn Nets Saturday. The trio combined for 54 points, 23 rebounds and 18 assists in the contest and helped the Knicks win their third consecutive game against their cross-town rival this season.

Adding some extra salt to the wound is the fact that Mikal Bridges, who was also on that 2015-16 Wildcats team, was on the losing end of Saturday’s game. Following the game, Hart had that in mind and referenced a specific scene from SpongeBob SquarePants that has made waves online as a popular meme.

“It’s like that SpongeBob meme when Squidward is looking out the window and he sees SpongeBob and Patrick having fun,” Hart said, per Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News. “[Mikal] is Squidward.”

Since joining Brooklyn midway through the 2022-23 season, Bridges has been unable to lead his Nets over the Knicks in five attempts, per StatMuse.

Instead, the committee of Wildcats has consistently had his number, and that’s reflected in the standings as well. The Knicks are currently 42-28 and sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn, on the other hand, is 26-45 and sits in 11th—five games outside of the play-in tournament.

Fortunately for Bridges and the Nets, another chance to take down the Knicks lies ahead on April 12.
