Kristen Wiig in Apple TV+’s Palm Royale Inspires ’60s Summer Styles

In Palm Royale, Apple TV+’s sun-drenched comedy series, zany social climber Maxine Simmons (played by Kristen Wiig) attempts to infiltrate high society in yesteryear Palm Beach. The series opens with Maxine scaling the walls of the titular social club like a shameless (albeit less agile) Bond girl on a mission. She takes delusional positivity to new heights with a murky, unbelievable backstory as baffling lies and larger-than-life truths give way to a mystery that plays out across 10 episodes. Wiig isn’t the only scene-stealer; her character is brilliantly and repeatedly brought back to reality by a cast of heavy-hitting comedic talents. The ensemble offers up Laura Dern as Linda Shaw, who busies herself raising the collective mind of women with spoken-word political activation rituals; Amber Chardae Robinson as Virginia, who offers a singular reprieve from the white woman shenanigans; Leslie Bibb as the equally striving Dinah Donahue, although she does it with the backing and taste of already being in high society; and Allison Janney as the queen bee of the scene, Evelyn Rollins.

Based on Juliet McDaniel’s debut novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, the adaption is a slight departure from the source material, wherein Maxine is an established socialite who falls from grace rather than an outsider looking to get in. What remains the same, however, is the scheming, ambitious heart of gold (or gold plate) at the center of the story.
