Lakers may reunite Luka Doncic with Mavericks fan favorite center via summer trade
The Los Angeles Lakersâ frontcourt situation has improved thanks to the organizationâs recent decision to sign Alex Len.Â
However, considering the Lakers likely arenât thrilled with a Len and Jaxson Hayes duo, the franchise could reunite Luka Doncic with a Dallas Mavericks fan favorite in the offseason and give JJ Reddick and company more low post stability.Â
âRob Pelinka likely has an eye on the Mavericks as well,â CBS Sportsâ Sam Quinn wrote Sunday.
âThey now have significant resources committed to three big men. If their playoff run winds up disappointing and they decide to diversify a bit, the Lakers would love either of the centers Doncic used to play with, Dereck Lively II (on a rookie deal) or Daniel Gafford (on a more affordable veteran deal).â
When the Mavericks acquired Gafford from the Washington Wizards, many werenât sure what to expect from the Arkansas product.Â
Although Gafford was productive with the Wizards during his 2.5-year stint with the franchise, he lacked experience playing a meaningful role with an organization capable of substantial playoff success.Â
When the 2024 postseason arrived, Gafford proved he could help guide the Mavericks to 13 playoff victories and an unexpected NBA finals appearance.Â
As a reliable screener and roller who can finish plays upstairs and protect the rim, the 26-year-old center averaged 9.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in 22 postseason contests.
While Gafford is currently nursing a right knee sprain, heâs played well with the Mavericks this year, netting 12.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per contest.Â
Itâs fair to assume an offseason trade for Gafford is the last thing on Los Angelesâ mind in mid-February.Â
Still, it doesnât change that the beloved Mavericks big man could be a future addition that appeases Doncic, Los Angelesâ 25-year-old superstar who values frontcourt players who can execute the pick-and-roll to perfection.Â
