The Los Angeles Lakers signed Gabe Vincent last offseason hoping he would elevate them into the title conversation, but now he might be a key figure in their hopes of swinging a deal before the Feb. 8 trade deadline.
Per Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, the Lakers have been including Vincent in their trade talks with other teams.
It’s unclear which players the Lakers might be seeking if they do include Vincent in a deal.
Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium cited Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray as the top target for Los Angeles, with Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie and Royce O’Neale of the Brooklyn Nets also receiving interest from the club.
Run It Back @RunItBackFDTV”Dejounte Murray is going to continue to emerge as the top target for the Lakers, from what I’m told…Another scenario to keep an eye on, players that the Lakers do have interest in I’m told, is three guys from the Nets: Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, Royce O’Neale.”… pic.twitter.com/fSlRUxzzpq
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst cited D’Angelo Russell as the Lakers player most likely to be traded before the deadline, noting he’s “been linked” in talks with the Hawks for Murray.
Charania previously reported the Hawks would want a third team involved that would take Russell because they “want to find a spot where they might be able to get an expiring contract back.”
Coming off a terrific playoff run with the Miami Heat, Vincent parlayed that into a three-year, $33 million contract from the Lakers. He averaged 12.7 points on 37.8 percent three-point shooting in 22 postseason games.
The Lakers haven’t had a chance to see what their lineup would look like with Vincent. He’s only played in five games this season due to a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery on Dec. 27 and came with a six-to-eight-week recovery timeline.
There hasn’t been an official update on Vincent’s status. Feb. 7 would mark exactly six weeks since he had the procedure.
In the five games he was able to play, Vincent averaged 5.4 points on 37.5 percent shooting and 3.0 assists per contest.
The Lakers are trying to find a lot of answers in a short period of time. They earned a huge win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night without LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but their 25-25 record is ninth in the Western Conference.
