Lisa Liu Performs Her Original Composition “Rendezvous,” a Superb Piece of Solo Jazz Guitar

Lisa Liu is a leading voice in jazz guitar, performing and teaching workshops around the world. We recently paid Liu a visit to film a lesson on warming up with the Segovia Scales for our Acoustic Guitar Teaching Artist series. Afterwards she shared this acoustic performance of an original composition, “Rendezvous,” off her new record, Temperance. “The melody came to me while I was walking along the Seine in Paris. It’s a classic 32-bar form,” Liu explains, but like all good jazz, “every time I play it, there’s always something new.”

The guitar Liu plays here is a custom build from Joshua Greenberg of Larkspur Lutherie. Because Liu is a bit of a globe trotter, she wanted a guitar that would travel well. So this manouche-style guitar features a detachable neck with easily adjustable action. “When I’m traveling the weather changes so much, the wood is contracting or expanding. To be able to adjust the action on the fly, it’s a huge boon.”
