The Argentina international tried to carry on, but did not last long before being forced to come off.

He looked devastated as he lay on the Man United pitch waiting for treatment, before hobbling straight down the tunnel.

Martinez only returned from injury in January after a number of months out with a foot problem.

He missed 22 games before making his return to first team action against Tottenham on January 14.

Martinez’s first start came in the FA Cup victory over Newport and then started United’s last two Premier League games.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag said: “It seems bad, we have to wait and make the right diagnosis.

“In this moment we are very sad, hopefully it is not too bad but we can only pray. It looks like he has to sit some games out injured again.”

It was not all doom and gloom on the pitch for the Red Devils, though, as they cruised past West Ham.
