Man City fans think one of their own wrecked Bernardo Silva’s penalty in Real Madrid defeat

A few Manchester City fans were furious one of their own forced Bernardo Silva to wait before his failed penalty in the Real Madrid defeat.

European champions City went crashing out of the Champions League on Wednesday as Madrid beat them on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Silva’s penalty was a shockerCredit: AFPSilva put his effort straight into the gloves of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who did not have to move, before Mateo Kovacic also failed to convert.

But rather than criticise Portugual midfielder Silva, City fans have been left pointing the finger at someone behind the goal.

With Pep Guardiola’s side leading the shootout after Luka Modric’s miss, Silva’s penalty was delayed by a City fan who held onto the ball in the stands.

The 29-year-old, who stood there for 40 seconds, was visibly frustrated and eventually jogged over to the crowd to demand the ball.

“If so can you name him, so we can make sure he never buys another drink in Manchester again.”

Another said: “Special mention to the City fan who held the ball for a few needless extra seconds, which meant Silva was waiting to take his pen.”

A third put: “The fan/s holding onto the ball before Bernardo Silva’s penalty…just baffling. Time and place!”

Manchester City stand refused to give the ball back, what a stupid fan. Meanwhile, Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor insisted that while the fan did not help Silva’s cause, the City star cannot shift the blame for such a poor penalty.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “In the end, Silva ran over and got the ball himself. In his mind, he must have thought, ‘I’m waiting here’.

“When you’re that level, that standard of player, it shouldn’t affect you.

“You should know your corners.”

He added: “Silva will look back and think, ‘Why did I do that?’ That’s not a penalty for a shootout.

“The keeper must’ve known he was going to try it from his run-up.”
