Man City join Liverpool in race for England star

England beat Switzerland 5-4 on penalties to set up a Euro 2024 semi-final against The Netherlands.

The Three Lions have underperformed in Germany so far this summer and looked to be on the verge of a quarter-final exit when Breel Embolo put the Swiss in front late on.

Bukayo Saka’s stunning striker levelled things up, but neither side could find a winner in extra-time, meaning the game went to a penalty shootout.

Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji saw Switzerland’s first spot-kick saved by Jordan Pickford, and England then scored all five to secure their place in the final four.

Off the pitch, it appears that one of Gareth Southgate’s players has attracted interest from yet another huge Premier League side.

As per Football Insider, Premier League champions Manchester City have joined rivals Liverpool in the race for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon, who is part of Southgate’s squad for the Euros this summer, has been linked with a move to Anfield over the past few weeks, but the report claims that the Reds now face competition from City in the race to sign the winger.

Gordon’s only appearance at the Euros so far came as a substitute in the closing stages of England’s goalless draw against Slovenia

The 23-year-old joined the Magpies from Everton in January last year and has since played 64 times for the North East club, scoring 13 goals and registering 11 assists.

He was included in Southgate’s squad for the tournament in Germany after an impressive season at club level, but Gordon’s only appearance so far came as a substitute in the closing stages of England’s goalless draw against Slovenia in the group stages.

The report claims that the Citizens have registered their interest in the winger, with Newcastle potentially having to sell at least one key player during the current transfer window in order to avoid breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Previously, Liverpool and Newcastle had been in talks over a potential deal for Gordon, with Reds defender Jarrell Quansah believed to be included as part of a proposed player-plus-cash deal.

Those talks have since collapsed, though, and Liverpool now face fierce competition for the winger’s signature.
