Man City to sell England international next summer

Premier League leaders Manchester City will be without influential midfielder Rodri when they travel to face Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.Ā

The Spaniard is expected to miss the remainder of the current campaign after suffering a ligament injury during last weekendā€™s draw against title rivals Arsenal at The Etihad.

Manager Pep Guardiola has several options to choose from to replace Rodri ā€“ including Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes ā€“ but his absence will undoubtedly boost Arsenalā€™s hopes of winning the title this term.

In the wake of Rodriā€™s injury, City appear to have made a big decision on their transfer strategy.

As per GiveMeSport, City will not recall Kalvin Phillips from his loan spell at Ipswich Town following the injury to Rodri.

Phillips ā€“ who joined the Tractor Boys on a season-long loan over the summer ā€“ would have been an obvious replacement for Rodri if he was still part of Guardiolaā€™s squad, and it had been suggested that the England international could be recalled.

Phillips is unlikely to play for Manchester City again

Instead, City have plans in place to sell the 28-year-old when he returns to Manchester at the end of the season, and they arenā€™t willing to change their plans.

Philips joined the Citizens from boyhood club Leeds United in 2022 but endured a frustrating first season at The Etihad, starting just two Premier League matches.

He continued to struggle during the first few months of last term, and was loaned to West Ham United in January.

His move to The London Stadium didnā€™t quite work out either, though, with Phillips quickly falling out of favour under David Moyes.

Phillips has played three times for Ipswich so far this season, but the report suggests that he has no future at City and will be sold during next summerā€™s transfer window.

Following his poor run of form over the past couple of campaigns, Phillips lost his place in the England squad and wasnā€™t involved in the European Championships earlier this summer.
