Man United could hijack Spurs’ move for England midfielder

Manchester United host West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Ruben Amorim will hope to see his side build on their emphatic 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League on Thursday, a result which set up a meeting with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final later this month.

The two English sides have both struggled domestically this term and currently sit 15th and 16th in the top flight table respectively, but the final in Bilbao will give either Amorim or Ange Postecoglou the opportunity to turn their season into a successful one.

Now, it appears that the two sides could also be battling it out off the pitch.

According to CaughtOffside, the Red Devils could rival Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of free agent Angel Gomes this summer.

The 24-year-old departed Old Trafford in 2020 after progressing through United’s youth academy, joining French side Lille and spending a brief spell on loan at Portuguese side Boavista.

Since returning to Lille he has established himself as one of their most important players, and his impressive form earned him his senior England debut towards the end of last year.

In total he has played 134 times for the French side across all competitions, but his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign and the midfielder is expected to depart the club as a free agent.

Tottenham are said to be in pole position to land the player this summer, however Man United are considering a surprise move to re-sign their former academy star.

Gomes is said to have attracted significant interest from a number of clubs as he nears the end of his current deal with Lille.
