Man United reward fringe player with surprise new deal

England boss Gareth Southgate will be desperate to see his side improve when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on Saturday.Ā

The Three Lions have been extremely underwhelming in Germany so far, winning just one group game and relying on a 95th minute Jude Bellingham goal to rescue extra-time against Slovakia in the last 16.

Captain Harry Kaneā€™s extra-time header secured Englandā€™s progression to the last eight of the competition, but Switzerland will undoubtedly provide a tough test for Southgateā€™s side and some people have even suggested that the Swiss will go in to the game as favourites.

Prior to the tournament in Germany, Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton was introduced to Southgateā€™s backroom staff as a goalkeeping coach, and the veteran ā€˜keeper has now been rewarded by the Red Devils with a new contract.

Heaton is currently part of the coaching staff for England

United confirmed on Tuesday that Heaton, 38, had signed a one year contract extension.

That is despite the former England international having played just three times for United since returning to Old Trafford in 2021.

Heaton previously graduated through Unitedā€™s academy as a youngster, and then spent time with several clubs including Burnley, Cardiff City an Aston Villa.

The three-time England international last played for United in a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg victory over Nottingham Forest in February last year.

The Englishman will once again act as emergency back-up for Erik ten Hagā€™s side during the upcoming season.
