Manchester United legend Paul Scholes brands Erik ten Hag’s side ‘weird’ in surprising view but stats back him up

Manchester United might be back in form, but Paul Scholes isn’t impressed.

The Red Devils won 2-1 away at Luton Town, with Rasmus Hojlund the match-winner in a two-goal display.

The Dane’s quick-fire double came in just seven minutes, but Carlton Morris pegged them back soon after and swung momentum well into the home side’s favour.

At half time the stats stood at 11 shots to eight in Luton’s favour, as well as 60 per cent possession for the home team.

Responding to what he’d seen, United legend Scholes let his feelings be known.

Writing to his one million Instagram followers, he said: “Weird team Utd… Reckon they could be the only team that could win 5 nil and get hammered!!”

The match finished with the shots and possession still in Luton’s favour, and that’s been somewhat of a trend.

United are one of the Premier League’s form teams with four straight wins, however some may argue that there’s more to football than just the score.

In a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in their previous outing, United were again out-shot and out-possessed, while in a 3-0 win over West Ham, they had just 12 shots compared to their opponent’s 22.

Delving a little deeper into the stats, only West Ham, Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton have conceded fewer shots than United’s 375 this season.

Luton may have come away thinking they deserved more, and Scholes likely agrees
On top of that, United’s average expected goals per game number is just 1.49, which puts them 11th in the table, way below their actual position of sixth.

Erik ten Hag would likely disagree with Scholes’ claim and say that creating better quality chances than their opponents, but for now at least, he has Hojlund to thank for papering over any underlying cracks.
