Marco Rubio Says He Might Not Accept the 2024 Election Results, Because That’s a Requirement of Potential Trump VPs Now
Marco Rubio declared Sunday that he might not accept the results of the 2024 election, a previously unthinkable statement for an elected official to make that is now basically a prerequisite for anyone hoping to be Donald Trump’s vice president.
Appearing on Meet the Press, the senator from Florida was asked by host Kristen Welker if he would “accept the election results of 2024, no matter what happens,” to which he responded, “No matter what happens? No. If it’s an unfair election, I think it’s gonna be contested by each side.” Then he claimed that “Democrats are the ones that have opposed every Republican victory since 2000, every single one.” Reminded that Democrats who’ve taken issue with election results have ultimately conceded, Rubio asked Welker if she had asked Democrats if they’d accept the election results. At no point did he acknowledge that denying the results of 2020 has basically become an official plank of the Republican Party—or that zero Democrats have incited a deadly insurrection because they couldn’t accept their election loss.
Rubio, of course, is just one of a number of potential Trump running mates who have refused to commit to accepting November’s results; others include senators J.D. Vance and Tim Scott, North Dakota governor Doug Burgum, and representatives Elise Stefanik and Byron Donalds. Stefanik has also said that had she been vice president on January 6, 2021, she “would not have done what Mike Pence did,” i.e., follow the law. Meanwhile, Donalds suggested in March that he might not accept the results of the 2028 election.
