Marisa Abela Goes ‘Back to Black’ as Amy Winehouse in New Trailer

There will never be another like Amy. The first trailer for the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, starring Industry’s Marisa Abela and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, has been released, showcasing the life and times of the troubled songbird.

“I don’t write songs to be famous,” Abela’s Winehouse says as the trailer begins. “I write songs because I don’t know what I’d do without them.”

The film follows the evolution of the “Rehab” singer from a talented teenage music school dropout in South London to international sensation. The trailer is set to a cover of Winehouse’s song “Back to Black” as sung by Abela, who covers Winehouse’s tracks throughout the film. Sporting Winehouse’s signature beehive hair, Abela recreates some of Winehouse’s most memorable performances in Back to Black, including her infamous Glastonbury set as well as her televised performance of “Rehab” at the 2008 Grammys, where she won record of the year.

Though they’re only hinted at in the trailer, Winehouse’s struggles with drugs and alcohol will presumably be a big part of the movie as well. They were well-documented throughout her life, as was her chaotic relationship with her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. In the trailer, Abela can be seen frolicking in the park with Fielder-Civil, played by Jack O’Connell, as well as running breathlessly from the paparazzi.

Back to Black also stars Eddie Marsan as Winehouse’s father Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Winehouse’s beloved grandmother, Cynthia Winehouse. “I wanna be remembered for just being me,” says Abela at the end of the trailer. You’ll have the chance to remember the legend that is Amy Winehouse when Back to Black hits theaters on April 12.
