The U.S. men’s basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday against South Sudan. However, fans got another look at what might be Team USA’s top competition on Tuesday.
France and Canada both picked up wins in group play, over Japan and Australia, respectively. Spain also defeated Greece on Tuesday, while the matchup between Germany and Brazil got underway at 3 p.m. ET.
France, led by Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert, scraped by Japan with a four-point victory. Team Canadaâwhich features NBA standouts Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, Dillon Brooks and RJ Barrettâhad a more impressive 10-point win over Australia.
Canada’s win was sparked by big performances from Barrett (24 points, 5 assists) and Gilgeous-Alexander (16 points, 4 rebounds).

France and Canada are now each 2-0 in group play and lead groups. They also figure to represent Team USA’s toughest competition in the elimination rounds. The United States entered the tournament as heavy favorites in men’s basketball with Canada and France coming in as the second- and third-favorites, respectively.
LeBron James, Kevin Durant and the rest of Team USA notched an impressive 110-84 win over Serbia on Sunday. The Americans will need to maintain focus against South Sudan and Puerto Rico (on Saturday) because some very dangerous teams will be in the mix when the quarterfinals kick off on August 6.
U.S. Women Win Gymnastics Gold3 of 4

On Monday, the U.S. men’s gymnastics team did something it hadn’t done since 2008, it won a team medal. While getting bronze was big for the men’s team, the U.S. women’s team has traditionally been held to a higher standard.
Tuesday’s spectacular performance in the team finals showed why. Fueled by stunning routines from Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee, Team USA defeated second-place Italy by 5.802 points. Brazil took home the bronze.
While Biles battled a calf injury during Sunday’s qualifying competition, she appeared to be back to 100 percent on Tuesday.

Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera (who competed in qualifying but not in the finals) helped the Americans win gold for the third time in four Olympics. The win also allowed Biles to break a tie with Shannon Miller to become the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history.
Biles’ newest gold medal is her fifth, and she has eight total Olympic medals. She’ll have a chance to add to her haul during Thursday’s individual all-around finalsâthough there’s a twist.
Lee also qualified for the finalsâChiles scored just a tad lower than Lee during qualifying but countries can only send two competitors to the finalsâand will face Biles for the first time in Olympic competition.
After Biles withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics, Lee went on to win gold in the individual all-around competition.

One of the most exciting moments of Tuesday’s action came late in the women’s rugby sevens bronze medal match between the United States and Australia.
With Australia holding a 12-7 lead, American Alex Sedrick took the ball, ran over a defender and broke a long run for a game-tying score. Her conversion kick officially clinched bronze for Team USA.

New Zealand, which defeated Team USA in the semifinals, took gold, while Canada took silver. However, the American’s bronze medal was still noteworthy. It became the first ever rugby sevens medal in U.S. Olympic history.
While the U.S. men’s football team has a long way to go before securing a medal, it secured a berth in the knockout round on Tuesday. Led by a two-goal performance from Kevin Paredes, Team USA raced to a 3-0 victory over Guinea.

The U.S. team lost 0-3 to France in its opener but secured a 4-1 victory over New Zealand in its second match of group play. The Americans will next meet Morocco on Friday morning (9 a.m. ET on USA Network) in a quarterfinals matchup.
This marks the first time the American men’s soccer team has made it out of the group stage since the 2000 Olympics in Sydneyâwhere Team USA finished fourth. The men’s team previously hadn’t even qualified for the Summer Games since 2008.
