Another Christmas, another milestone for Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has broken Spotify’s single-day streams record by racking up north of 23 million plays. The nearly three-decade-old track’s latest commercial feat entered the media spotlight in a report from TMZ, which didn’t cite sources for the stat but indicated that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” had specifically generated 23.70 million streams on Christmas Eve.
According to Chartmetric data, however, it was Christmas Day that delivered the record-setting streaming showing, with a slightly higher 23.78 million plays having been added to the song’s total following the holiday.
Now ranked second on the same list – that is, top tracks by single-day Spotify streams – is Wham!’s “Last Christmas.” Per Chartmetric data, the George Michael-penned work itself recorded approximately 21.95 million streams during Christmas. (Aside from the main “Last Christmas” release and upload, which boasts 1.46 billion on-platform streams, a separate “single version,” a “pudding mix,” and more have millions of streams to their credit.)
Similarly, Brenda Lee’s rendition of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (1958) is a member of Spotify’s expanding “Billions Club” when factoring for its various uploads, including 993.33 million on-platform streams for the original, 118.15 million streams for a re-recording, and several others.
All told, following a record-setting 2023 holiday peak of its own, the song secured the fourth spot on Spotify’s list of top tracks by single-day streams. (Adele’s “Easy on Me” still occupies the third slot, having nabbed almost 20 million streams upon becoming available in mid-October of 2021.)Bringing the focus back to the initially mentioned “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” the track currently has a staggering 1.78 billion overall streams on Spotify – far more than Carey’s other holiday efforts, among them “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and its 289.83 million on-platform plays as well as “O Holy Night” (128.24 million).
Of course, the holiday-season spike behind “All I Want for Christmas Is You” hasn’t been limited to Spotify. Per Chartmetric data once again, the Mariah Carey song’s Pandora streams, having grown by the better part of one million each day since the 18th, now exceed 300 million in total.
Meanwhile, the data platform identified a nearly 5,000 percent boost in Airplay Spins for “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from late November through Christmas Eve, besides close to 31 million views for the song’s audio-only YouTube upload. The music video and different versions yet seem to have garnered even more views.
Lastly, Genius’ lyrics for “All I Want for Christmas Is You” have experienced an over 14 percent page-view increase (for some 300,000 additional visits) during the past month, the stats show, with a surprisingly high 517,000 Shazam counts attributable to the ultra-popular song across the identical stretch.
