Met Gala Arrivals Are Lookin’ Superfine: Live Updates

Have you looked camp in the eye yet today? It’s tradition every first Monday of May since Karlie Kloss paved the way six years ago. At the 2025 Met Gala on May 5, gracious host Anna Wintour is joined by co-chairs Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell, Colman Domingo, and A$AP Rocky, whose sartorial accomplishment, along with that of honorary co-chair LeBron James, epitomizes the Met Costume Institute’s exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year, celebrities attending the annual fundraising ball will attempt to stare down Black Dandyism, a revolutionary Black fashion expression that challenged traditions throughout history. Meanwhile, all of us normies will judge directly from the comfort of our own beds. As Vulture writer Jason Frank put it, “Somebody is going to be in the best outfit of the year, and hopefully someone else is in the worst.” Follow along live with the arrivals, soon-to-be iconic red-carpet moments, and the best looks of the evening.

This is a developing story.

Okay, typically during the Met Gala, celebrities aren’t supposed to be using their phones. But Megan Thee Stallion is an Aquarius, so the rules do not apply to her. She posted a video with Doechii and Angel Reese taste testing the corn bread and caviar. Fingers crossed she got enough footage for a full vlog.

Let’s make that 61 hats. Rihanna (and her baby bump) made it to the carpet.

There are so many hats, we’re now getting duplicates. Anna Sawai and Zendaya twin in all-white with the latter in Pharrell for Louis Vuitton.

After the Vogue livestream ends, Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian arrive at the Met — probably so they don’t have to answer the hard-hitting Q’s that La La Anthony was asking. Kim has on the type of hat that a bank robber wears in Sunday morning cartoons, while Kylie looks like the kind of girl a robber like Kim might steal that money for. Sadly, Kylie is Timmy-less.

No one does it quite like Janelle Monáe. They stepped onto the blue carpet wearing a floor-length trompe l’oeil cape that looked like a suit, but then opened up to reveal another outfit. Thom Browne, who designed this illusion of a look in collaboration with Wicked costume designer Paul Tazewell, told the New York Times that the cape is a reference to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (which also inspired Monáe’s debut EP). Oh, and the monocle that Monaé’s wearing? It has clock hands that actually move. We looked, and, it might be time for the competition to pack it up.

Not with Kylie Jenner at the Met Gala. Guess he’s still recovering from partying like an F1 superstar.

Watching her at the Met Gala is one of those moments where someone is getting exactly what she knows she deserves. Kind of like when Norma Desmond walks into the movie studio again …

There will be no hateration in this dancery, but Mary J. Blige will be serving hat-eration.

Revealing matching flared pants underneath her Technicolor dream coat.

With a whole piano as a backpack. I need 3,000 photos.

And, girl, it looks good.

Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan are both there in outfits that look like they’d fit on a Broadway stage. Ciara is there with her beau, Russell Wilson, as Future walks the carpet not far behind them.

There are also some celebrity vectors: Rosalía is in attendance, as are her former brief flings Hunter Schafer and Jeremy Allen White. While Miley Cyrus is showing off her abs in a two-piece black outfit, her exes Patrick Schwarzenegger and Nick Jonas are out there. Kendall Jenner also briefly dated Nick Jonas, as well as Bad Bunny and A$AP Rocky, who just announced his third child with Rihanna. Hailey Bieber is in attendance — will her husband Justin show? If so, it might be a little uncomfortable for him to see ex Sofia Richie.

And it goes to the pride of Philadelphia, Jalen Hurts.

The pop girlies of the moment showed up and showed out at the Met Gala — from newcomers Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, both in glorious magenta, to Tumblr-era faves Charli XCX and Lana Del Rey, both bedecked in black. Even former musician Rihanna came! Maybe my favorite look of the crew, however, is Doja Cat in a combination of a pantless suit covered in a combination of cheetah and pinstripe, with huge shoulders. It’s got more than a little drag to it, exactly what the Met Gala is for.

Damson Idris’s helmet would be No. 43, but then Dapper Dan showed up and showed out.

But Lana Del Rey just brought a piece of her gator-touring husband Jeremy Dufrene with her to the Met Gala. The only thing better than Lana Del Rey showing up is Lana Del Rey with an alligator in her hair.

Dressed ’fro to cheek in custom Louis Vuitton.

Would a rookie wear pants this comfy?

And so far, Alton Mason’s Slick Rick tribute is winning.

Bad Bunny got Prada to make him a custom pava, a straw hat made from Puerto Rican palm trees, for his brown tuxedo fit. Meanwhile, his ex Kendall Jenner’s look was less island time, more business.

Diana Ross led the way, and Tracee Ellis Ross followed.

Including Jodie Turner-Smith’s hat, which should really count as two.

And she’s running out of international, high-profile events to announce during. Congrats to the baby’s co-chair, A$AP Rocky.

George Lucas and his wife, Mellody, are apparently having date night at the Met Gala.

Mindy Kaling and Barry Keoghan both look as though they’re there to audition for the Les Misérables national tour. Kaling, especially, is giving Javert.

Including the one Al Sharpton is holding in his hand, not wearing on his head.

That’s the only thing that could make Tramell Tillman look better.

I want to study every stitch and button on this custom Thom Browne suit-gown.

A choir serenaded co-chairs Anna Wintour, Colman Domingo, and Lewis Hamilton with an a cappella rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” at the top of the Met steps. (“Y’all better! I know that’s right,” someone reacts approvingly during the performance.) According to red-carpet host La La Anthony, this is the Silk and Sound choir, and they’ll be performing inside as guests continue to arrive tonight.

That’s including Top Chef contestant Kwame Onwuachi of Tatiana in a crown. He provided the food inside and ate.

The hair and makeup takes it from clown into elegant.

That’s including Lewis Hamilton’s flouncy white beret.

Christian Latchman, the catalogue cover star of this year’s Met Gala, has arrived wearing a loose-fitting, wide-collared white suit that features a pleated train that pooled at his feet when he hit the top of the steps.

The content creator made his Met Gala debut in 2024, when TikTok bought a table at the event. Many people expected him to return this year. After all, the theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and he’s a prominent Black fashion influencer who puts together high-fashion outfits that have gotten Vogue to praise him as TikTok’s best-dressed man — of course we want to see how he would’ve celebrated Black dandyism. Instead, he confirmed on May 4 that he did not receive an invitation. Make it make sense, Anna Wintour.

No, that’s not the Met Gala red carpet. First, stars have to descend from their hotel rooms and either pose for departure photos, like Vogue correspondent Emma Chamberlain, or hide their real look under a distracting cover-up, like Colman Domingo. And just for a little drama, it’s raining. Guess Timothée Chalamet won’t be walking over to the museum this year.
