Mets could sign $119 million All-Star if they cut ties with Pete Alonso

The New York Mets were close to reaching the World Series in 2024. While their top priority will be Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, they could end up signing a different marquee free agent if those plans fail.

While listing potential suitors for Alex Bregman, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand named the Mets as a possible landing spot for the Houston Astros star.

“Much like the Yankees, the Mets’ pursuit of Soto could set the tone for the rest of their offseason,” wrote Feinsand. “Pete Alonso’s free-agent future also will play into New York’s interest in Bregman. If the Mets let Alonso walk, they can either bring in a new first baseman or move Mark Vientos to first, opening third base for a potential acquisition such as Bregman.”

Bregman has been a key part of the Astros’ success over the last eight seasons. He would be a big-time addition for Steve Cohen and the Mets. He is a two-time All-Star, Silver Slugger and Gold Glover. He is by far the best third baseman on the market and would be an upgrade over Vientos in the hot corner should Alonso leave and Vientos play at first base.

Spotrac projects Bregman to sign a four-year, $119 million deal in free agency. He hit 26 home runs in 2024 and won his first career Gold Glove. Bregman seemed destined to sign an extension with the Astros, but that has not happened. If the Mets are unable to keep Alonso or land Soto, Bregman could be one of many splash signings.
