Minecraft Movie Obliterates Box Office Records as Jack Black Flick Goes Viral
Chicken jockey?
The Minecraft movie has shattered all expectations, breaking Box Office records with a staggering $301 million worldwide opening.
The adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, was generally panned by critics for lacking the creativity of its source material – but after a series of clips went viral, the release has been roundly applauded on by rowdy teenagers.
The film is already the second biggest release of the year, and is on track to overtake current frontrunner Captain America: Brave New World in a matter of days. The Marvel effort has managed $410 million in its eight weeks at theatres.
The movie’s $157 million debut in North America makes it bigger than Super Mario Bros, and it’s not far behind internationally either. Fascinatingly, the momentum it now has heading into the Easter weekend could give it a second wind.
We’ve seen dozens of videos on social media of American theatres erupting at various lines from the film, so don’t expect this one to slow down.
With just $150 million spent on the film’s budget, it looks like distributor Warner Bros has struck solid gold.
