Pupils of the Mivland Montessori School at Ablekuma in the Ga Central Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, on Wednesday, paid a visit to the New Times Corporation (NTC) in Accra, on an educational excursion.

Led by the director of the school, Mr Michael Anson and some other teachers, the visit was to enable the pupils to learn at first hand newspaper industry especially the production and distribution processes.

At the Ghanaian Times newsroom, the Acting News Editor, Norman Cooper on behalf of the Editor, Mr David Agbenu, took them through the process of gathering news before they were finally published and ultimately get to newsstands.

He also explained the criteria to the pupils about how the stories were selected for publication, emphasising that some of the news items were from the presidency, courts, Parliament, police, and regional correspondents.

In response to questions from the students about pursuing the truth in a story from journalists before publication, he said it was required of every journalist to provide the news desk with credible and authentic stories that could be verified.

“For instance, if a journalist wrote a story which hinges on the reputation of people and institutions, it was incumbent on the reporter to ensure all parties involved were given the opportunity to give their part of the issue before the story was published,” he added.

Mr Cooper urged the pupils to take their studies seriously and strive to become good citizens in the future and contribute their quota to the development of the country.

On his part, Mr Micheal Ansong, the Director of Mivland Montessori School, expressed gratitude to the New Times Corporation for the warm reception and their annual educational excursion to the Corporation to expose their students to knowledge outside the classroom.
