MLB Playoff Bracket 2024: Mets vs. Phillies NLDS Odds, Preview0 of 3
Bleacher Report
The New York Mets’ incredible run will continue into the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies.
New York’s come-from-behind win in Thursday’s Game 3 against the Milwaukee Brewers set up the second of two divisional clashes in the NLDS. The San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers reside on the opposite end of the NL bracket.
New York’s benefited from clutch hitting by its stars over the last week to clinch a playoff berth and to advance into the NLDS.
The Mets carry a ton of momentum into Saturday’s Game 1, but the Phillies are the experienced playoff ball club in the series.
Philadelphia won four playoff series over the last two seasons and it has a ton of hardened playoff veterans in Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Zack Wheeler and others.
The Phillies will try to end a trend they helped start over the last two seasons. The top-two seeds were eliminated by the wild-card winners in each of the previous two postseason in the NL.

The Mets used two incredible comebacks in the last week to keep up the momentum gained from the second half of the regular season.
Francisco Lindor powered a come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday to clinch a playoff spot and Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead, three-run home run to beat the Brewers in Thursday’s Game 3.
Lindor and Alonso will be asked to come up with plenty of big hits throughout the best-of-five series against Philadelphia.
The pitching situation might be a little difficult to figure out in Saturday’s Game 1 since Luis Severino, Sean Manaea and Jose Quintana were used in the wild-card round. Edwin Diaz threw 39 pitches over 1.2 innings on Thursday, so his availability might be in doubt for Saturday as well.
The New York lineup will have to get the job done against Zack Wheeler in Game 1, which is no easy task for anyone, before the Mets can reset their rotation.
The Mets do have history on their side, though, since the four wild-card series winners in the National League all advanced to the NLCS over the last two seasons.

The Phillies are the best equipped top-two seed to deal with a matchup with a red-hot wild-card series winner.
The Phillies advanced to the NLCS after starting in the wild-card round in 2022 and 2023, so they should know what the Mets are experiencing right now.
Whether or not that helps the Phillies combat the Mets in the NLDS remains to be seen, but at least on paper, they are prepared to deal with the threat.
The NL East champion should rely on its top-end pitching to silence the Mets. Wheeler held the Mets to two earned runs on September 22, Cristopher Sanchez owns a 2.21 home ERA and Aaron Nola only allowed six earned runs in four postseason starts in 2023.
The Phillies have the clutch bats to match Lindor and Alonso between Schwarber, Harper, Turner and Nick Castellanos.
There’s no question that the Mets pose a tough matchup in their current form, but the Phillies have seen everything over the last two postseasons and that should help them navigate the NLDS.
