As the Miami Marlins continue their in-season fire sale, All-Star closer Tanner Scott is on the radar for several playoff contenders leading up to the trade deadline.
Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies are among six teams believed to be in the mix for Scott.
Other teams Heyman mentioned as showing interest in Scott include the Baltimore Orioles, Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners.
The Marlins kicked off trade season back in May when they dealt Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres. They were back in action this week when reliever A.J. Puk was traded to the Diamondbacks for prospects Deyvison De Los Santos and Andrew Pintar on Thursday.
Scott seems like a certainty to be moved before Tuesday’s deadline. He’s set to become a free agent in the offseason and is owed just over $2 million for the rest of the season.
Given how many teams are looking for relief pitching right now, the Marlins are in a strong position to get a good return for a pending free agent.
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported on Friday the Phillies are expected to acquire “at least one” reliever before the deadline.
Arizona’s acquisition of Puk could help any talks with the Marlins since the two clubs are already familiar with each other.
Scott was originally drafted by the Orioles in 2014 and spent his first five big league seasons in Baltimore before being traded to Miami in April 2022. The Orioles already upgraded their rotation by acquiring Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
The Yankees and Dodgers both have rotation concerns, but the market for starters might be either too steep or the options too limited that building a dominant bullpen capable of eating a lot of innings in a playoff series might be the better way to go.
Scott earned his first career All-Star selection this season. The 30-year-old has a career-low 1.18 ERA with 53 strikeouts and 19 hits allowed over 45.2 innings in 44 appearances.
The MLB trade deadline is on Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
