The Mononoke anime film—Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa—opened in Japan on Friday, and after that it was revealed that the project is actually a full trilogy. In fact, the second film already has a date, so fans in Japan should mark their calendars for its March 14, 2025 premiere. A third film will follow, but that release date has yet to be revealed.
In the meantime, tickets for the second Mononoke anime film will go on sale starting August 2, 2024, featuring the bonus incentive of an A4-size card with the below illustration.
Kenji Nakamura is directing once again for the anime film, with Twin Engine producing. Following a delay that moved it out of last year, Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa opened in Japan on July 26, 2024.
This follows the 12-episode Mononoke TV anime, which itself is a spinoff of the Ayakashi – Samurai Horror Tales anime. The series is available to stream on The Roku Channnel, Netflix and Crunchyroll, which describes it like so:
Mononoke Plot
In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague both households and the countryside. Only one person has the power to kill them where they stand: the Medicine Seller. But in order to draw his spirit-slaying sword he must first understand the Form, Truth, and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with sharp wit, he wanders from place to place striking down the evil spirits in his wake.
