MTV Movie & TV Awards on Pause for 2024, Will Return Next Year in New Format
The MTV Movie & TV Awards are on pause for 2024, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Sources told THR that the show will return next year with a âreimaginedâ format.
The show last aired in May 2023 amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore dropped out in a show of solidarity with the writers.Â
The show aired but with numerous pretaped segments and acceptance speeches, clips from upcoming movies and TV shows and previous editions of the MTV Movie & TVÂ Awards. Additionally the show, awards categories and nominees and winners were announced via a voiceover, which initially referred to the event as the â2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards special.â
When Barrymore dropped out, it was announced that sheâd agreed to host the 2024 awards. Itâs unclear if sheâs still attached to host the 2025 installment.
âI have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike. Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation,â Barrymore said in a statement at the time. âAnd until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but Iâll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I canât wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.â
Last yearâs big winners included Scream VI on the movie side and The Last of Us on the TV side.
