With the regular signing period for football recruits set to open Wednesday, there remains a little bit of intrigue in the recruiting world.

Most of the nation’s top recruits have already signed letters of intent and/or enrolled in college programs. Of those who haven’t, most have at least verbally committed. However, there’s still a chance we’ll see a few late surprises.

Over the weekend, for example, Burley (Idaho) receiver Gatlin Bair chose the Oregon Ducks over the Michigan Wolverines. According to Brandon Huffman of 247Sports, however, Bair plans to serve on an LDS mission, and while Bair is expected to sign Wednesday, he won’t enroll until 2026.

Below, we’ll dive into some of the latest storylines surrounding the onset of the signing period, examine the class rankings and make a few predictions.

Amaree Williams, Athlete, The Benjamin School2 of 4

The Benjamin School (Florida) recruit Amaree Williams247Sports.com

Like Bair, The Benjamin School’s (North Palm Beach, Florida) Amaree Williams made an announcement over the weekend. He declared his intent to join the Florida State Seminoles.

Originally a 2025 recruit, Williams reclassified to the 2024 class back in December. A two-way player in high school, the 6’4″, 215-pound standout will have numerous positional options at the next level.

“Gets the job done as a jumbo wide receiver and could transition to a move tight end at the next level, but ceiling looks to be highest as a 3-4 linebacker that can rush the passer in some situations and drop back into coverage in others,” Andrew Ivins of 247Sports wrote.

With an announcement coming this close to signing day, it would be a surprise to see Williams, 247Sports’ 209th-ranked recruit, pivot at the last minute. The prediction here is that he sticks with Florida State, though nothing will be guaranteed until Williams puts pen to paper.

The recruiting process has seen a few shake-ups thanks in no small part to coaching changes. Alabama, which has the second-ranked recruiting class, lost longtime coach Nick Saban to retirement in January.

Saban’s announcement briefly caused Saraland (Alabama) receiver recruit Ryan Williams to consider other options. The 5-star receiver—and 247Sports’ fourth-ranked recruit—decommitted from Alabama shortly after Saban’s decision.

However, Alabama’s hiring of former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer seemingly has Williams back on board with the Crimson Tide. His choice appears to be final.

“I knew where I wanted to be,” Williams said, per Jerry Humphrey III of the Montgomery Advertiser. “Things started getting crazy in recruitment so I thought to just shut it down. I sat with coach in his office and let him know immediately and he was excited.”

DeBoer’s move also impacted Centennial (Peoria, Arizona) edge-rusher Noah Carter. The 4-star recruit decommitted from Washington following DeBoer’s departure and now appears set to follow him to Alabama.

Carter committed to the Crimson Tide last month. While both Williams and Carter could, theoretically, still change their minds, the prediction here is that both will be playing for DeBoer in 2024.

Terry Bussey, Athlete, Timpson4 of 4

Timpson (Texas) recruit Terry Bussey247Sports.com

Timpson (Texas) athlete Terry Bussey is the most intriguing recruit to track as the signing period opens. 247Sports’ 11th-ranked recruit has been committed to Texas A&M since September, but he remains unsigned and has continued weighing his options.

Bussey hasn’t decommitted from Texas A&M but has recently visited with the LSU Tigers. According to On3’s Sam Spiegelman, the 5-star recruit is deciding between those two programs.

The Tigers have been pushing hard to flip Bussey, and he appears interested in the potential opportunity.

“We have a great relationship and I talk to them every day,” Bussey said of LSU, per On3’s Shea Dixon. “I talk to multiple people on that staff every day and it’s been great building a relationship with them.”

The Aggies may still have the inside track—Bussey took another official visit with Texas A&M on Sunday—but Bussey’s situation is far from settled. He also visited Georgia in late January.

The prediction here is that LSU’s late push convinces Bussey to change course and become a Tiger.
